The Facilities Crew Member plays a key role in making an excellent first impression among our members and guests by providing and maintaining a welcoming, clean, safe and secure environment on our entire campus. The Museum’s 8+ acre campus includes our 3-acre outdoor experience, Joy Park, with water features, a small apple orchard, sand dunes, zip lines, native grasslands and other thoughtfully designed landscaping throughout. The Facilities Crew Member is responsible for maintaining high quality presentation and safety standards, therefore effective development and execution of short and long term landscape design and maintenance strategies is essential.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 1 Year experience with basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC troubleshooting skills.
• 1 Year experience operating landscaping and snow removal equipment.
• Experience and familiarity with small machines, i.e. mowers, blowers, string trimmer, etc.
• Experience using power tools, i.e. hand drills, circular saws, etc.
• Understanding of landscaping and irrigation systems a plus
• Drywall repair and painting experience a plus
• Confident and motivated self-starter with a strong attention to detail and quality
• Ability to effectively communicate with staff, volunteers, and guests in a direct and respectful manner
• Team-oriented and able to successfully work with people from diverse backgrounds
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Able to follow standard operating procedures and checklists with high accuracy
• Spanish speaker is a plus
• Must be at least 18 years of age

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily inspections of museum grounds and facilities, removing litter, debris, and other hazards to maintain a clean, safe and welcoming environment for guests and staff.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks, including replacing HVAC filters, changing lightbulbs, and monitoring building systems for operational use.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests and complete general repairs throughout the Museum
• Perform basic electrical maintenance such as replacing outlets, switches, light fixtures and troubleshooting minor electrical issues within established safety guidelines.
• Complete minor plumbing repairs, including fixing leaks, replacing faucets, unclogging drains and repairing restroom fixtures.
• Repair and maintain interior and exterior building surfaces, including drywall patching, painting, caulking, and touch-up work.
• Maintain accurate records of completed work, equipment inspections, maintenance activities and supply inventory, as required.
• Maintain museum grounds through regular watering, pruning, fertilizing, planting and removal of dead or damaged trees, shrubs, flowers, and other landscaping elements.
• Install, repair, and maintain hardscape features, including flagstone walkways, patios, retaining walks, irrigation components, and decorative landscape elements.
• Inspect, replenish and replace landscape materials such as mulch, gravel, rock and seasonal plannings to ensure an attractive and well-maintained appearance.
• Perform routine week control through manual removal and the safety application of approved herbicides in accordance with safety and environmental regulations.
• Operate landscaping equipment to mow lawns, trip vegetation, edge walkways and maintain turf areas throughout museum property.
• Support special projects, event setup and breakdown, exhibit installations, facility improvements and other operational needs as assigned.
• Safely operate and maintain tools, equipment, vehicles and machinery required for groundskeeping and facility maintenance activities.
• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entryways, parking areas and emergency access routes using appropriate equipment and materials to ensure safe access during winter weather.
• Follow all Museum safety policies, procedures and emergency protocols while promoting a culture of safety and accountability among staff, volunteers, contractors, and guests.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the daily operations of facilities and overall guest experience of the Museum.
