About The Position

The Fabricator is a skilled production employee responsible for cutting, forming, joining, and finishing metal materials to produce components and assemblies used in Enterprise Electrical’s prefabrication and construction operations. This role interprets drawings, dimensions, specifications, and work orders; lays out and prepares materials; and operates fabrication tools and equipment to produce accurate, durable work that meets project requirements and established quality standards. The Fabricator performs hands-on work under the direction of the Lead Fabricator or Prefab Shop Foreman and is accountable for the safety, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned tasks. This position checks measurements and fit-up throughout production, identifies defects or drawing discrepancies, and communicates material needs and production concerns before proceeding with work that could affect quality or safety. In a growing organization, the Fabricator must adapt to changing priorities, fabrication methods, and project requirements while maintaining consistent workmanship and collaborating with shop team members.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of metal fabrication processes, including cutting, forming, fit-up, joining, grinding, and finishing.
  • Ability to interpret fabrication drawings, dimensions, symbols, specifications, and work orders and recognize when clarification is needed.
  • Knowledge of metal and structural steel characteristics, material identification, and the effect of fabrication processes on component fit and quality.
  • Ability to use tape measures, squares, calipers, levels, and other layout or inspection tools to verify dimensions and specified tolerances.
  • Ability to apply shop mathematics, including fractions, decimals, angles, and basic geometry, to layout and fabrication tasks.
  • Skill in safely setting up and operating assigned fabrication equipment, hand tools, and power tools within training and authorization.
  • Knowledge of shop safety practices, machine guarding, hot-work precautions, safe material handling, and required PPE.
  • Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and attention to detail to position materials and produce consistent workmanship.
  • Ability to identify fabrication defects and routine process problems, make authorized adjustments, and escalate concerns beyond assigned authority.
  • Ability to organize assigned work, follow production priorities, and adapt to changing project requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate task status and quality concerns to coworkers and shop leadership.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and contribute to a team while maintaining safe work practices and accountability.
  • 2–4 years of hands-on experience in metal fabrication, welding, structural steel, or related shop production work; an equivalent combination of relevant technical training and demonstrated fabrication experience may be considered.
  • Experience reading drawings or work orders and independently completing assigned fabrication tasks to specified dimensions and quality requirements.
  • Experience using measuring and layout tools and operating cutting, drilling, grinding, forming, or joining equipment applicable to assigned work.
  • Experience performing fit-up, assembly, and dimensional inspections and identifying defects or work requiring correction.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical training, vocational education, an apprenticeship, or coursework in welding, metal fabrication, machining, or a related trade preferred.
  • Experience in construction prefabrication or producing components for electrical installations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, shop sketches, specifications, cut lists, and work orders to determine dimensions, materials, and assembly requirements.
  • Confirm assigned work instructions and identify missing dimensions, conflicting requirements, or drawing revisions; obtain clarification before fabrication.
  • Select, inspect, measure, and mark metal stock and structural steel for cutting and forming, using approved dimensions and material specifications.
  • Cut materials to size using authorized saws, shears, plasma cutters, or other cutting equipment available in the shop.
  • Bend, form, drill, punch, or otherwise shape materials using appropriate machinery, fixtures, and tools within demonstrated qualifications.
  • Position, align, clamp, and fit components before joining to maintain required dimensions, clearances, and assembly alignment.
  • Join components through welding, bolting, fastening, or other specified methods; perform welding only when trained and qualified for the assigned process.
  • Grind, deburr, clean, and finish fabricated components to remove sharp edges and prepare surfaces for subsequent work or installation.
  • Check measurements, squareness, alignment, fit, and workmanship during fabrication and inspect completed components against drawings and specified tolerances.
  • Identify and report defects, damaged materials, and nonconforming work; complete authorized repairs or rework and verify corrections.
  • Operate computer-controlled fabrication equipment, when assigned, within approved programs and settings after completing required training and authorization.
  • Stage, label, organize, and move materials and finished assemblies to support production flow and prevent damage or identification errors.
  • Use approved lifting methods and material-handling equipment; operate forklifts or other powered equipment only when trained and authorized.
  • Perform pre-use equipment checks, routine cleaning, and permitted maintenance; report malfunctions and remove unsafe equipment from use according to company procedures.
  • Follow required machine guarding, hot-work, hazardous-energy control, and personal protective equipment procedures applicable to assigned work.
  • Maintain accurate work-order, production, material-use, and time records as required; communicate task status, material shortages, delays, and equipment concerns to the lead or foreman.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized, manage scrap appropriately, and collaborate with coworkers to complete assigned work safely and on schedule.
  • Adapt to revised priorities and approved work methods and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
