About The Position

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) is seeking a Fabric Worker to modify, alter, and repair clothing. This role is responsible for the placement and handling of military ornamentation on uniforms. The position may also involve receiving articles for laundering or dry cleaning. Requirements

• One year of experience providing knowledge and skill in basic modifications, alterations, and repair of clothing.
• One year of experience with knowledge and skill in using a sewing machine to perform alterations and repairs on garments, such as pinning and basting, trimming, lengthening and shortening sleeves, taking in and letting out waists of jackets, replacing zippers, lowering collars, replacing pockets, shortening and lengthening pants, tapering skirts, and sewing on ratings and stripes.
• Ability to stand, stoop, bend, and kneel to measure and mark items.
• Ability to sit for long periods while operating a sewing machine or doing hand sewing.
• Continual use of hands, arms, and fingers required for sewing and using shears.

Nice To Haves

• One year of high school education may be substituted for 3 months of general experience, up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform alterations and repairs on uniform and civilian garments, including pinning, basting, trimming, lengthening/shortening sleeves, adjusting waists, replacing zippers, lowering collars, replacing pockets, shortening/lengthening pants, tapering skirts, and sewing on ratings and stripes.
• Take customer body measurements to ensure proper garment fit.
• Receive special orders for affixing medals, ribbons, badges, devices, and ratings onto uniforms.
• Select appropriate insignia from a large assortment for military personnel.
• Measure correct placement of items to be affixed, mark, trim, baste, and press upon completion.
• Mount medals and sew items onto uniforms as appropriate.
• Operate a sewing machine and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• Receive garments and articles for laundering and dry cleaning from authorized patrons.
• Complete Laundry Dry Cleaning tickets with patron information, date, and price using a price list.
• Stack items into laundry bags for pick-up.
• Receive tickets from patrons for pick-up of cleaned articles, verifying ticket numbers match.
• Turn over cleaned articles to patrons and collect payments.
• Operate a cash register and manage a personal cash fund.
• Prepare Daily Salesperson's Cash Report.
• Requisition and maintain adequate stock levels.
• Assist in inventory taking.
• Exercise tact, good manners, and courtesy when serving and assisting customers, responding promptly and friendly to inquiries.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
