About The Position
Modifies, alters, and repairs clothing, and handles military ornamentation on uniforms and other articles. The position may also receive garments for laundering or dry cleaning. It involves garment alterations and repairs, measuring customers for proper fit, applying military insignia, operating a sewing machine and cash register, processing laundry and dry-cleaning transactions, maintaining stock and inventory, and providing courteous customer service. The work is performed in enclosed areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. The worker may be exposed to punctures, scratches, minor injuries from needles, irritation from specially treated materials, and sewing-machine noise.
Requirements
- One year of general experience providing knowledge and skill to perform basic clothing modifications, alterations, and repairs.
- One year of specialized experience using a sewing machine to alter and repair garments, including pinning and basting, trimming, adjusting sleeves and waistlines, replacing zippers and pockets, adjusting collars and pants, tapering skirts, and sewing on ratings and stripes.
- Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, and kneel to measure and mark items; sit for extended periods while operating a sewing machine or doing hand sewing; and continually use hands, arms, and fingers for sewing and using shears.
Responsibilities
- Alter and repair uniform and civilian garments, including pinning and basting, trimming, adjusting sleeves and waistlines, replacing zippers and pockets, adjusting collars and pants, tapering skirts, and sewing on ratings and stripes.
- Take customers’ body measurements to help ensure proper garment fit.
- Receive special orders for attaching medals, ribbons, badges, devices, ratings, and other military insignia; measure and mark placement, trim, baste, press, mount medals, and sew items onto uniforms as appropriate.
- Operate and maintain a sewing machine and keep the work area clean and orderly.
- Receive garments from authorized patrons for laundering or dry cleaning and complete tickets with the customer’s name, Social Security number, date, and price using the price list.
- Sort and stack garments into laundry bags for pickup.
- Process cleaned-article pickups by matching customer tickets to article ticket numbers, handing over articles, and collecting payment.
- Operate a cash register, manage an individual cash fund, and prepare the Daily Salesperson Cash Report.
- Requisition and maintain adequate stock supplies.
- Assist with inventory taking.
- Serve customers courteously, respond tactfully to inquiries, and assist patrons promptly and in a friendly manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
