About The Position

YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community. After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships. YMCA Camp Pine Crest is an overnight camp serving children, families, and organizations through naturally focused programs that embody the mission, vision, and outcomes of the YMCA. Camp Pine Crest is made up of 650 acres of Muskoka wilderness surrounded by 3 interconnected lakes with 8km of shoreline; has over 26km of hiking trails and 7,500 sq. ft. of dock and has 60 buildings. Drivers play a critical role in the camp’s out-tripping program, providing safe and reliable transportation for camper and leadership groups. The role involves operating fifteen-passenger vans with canoe trailers on drives ranging from short trips within two hours of camp to multi-day journeys as far as Manitoba or Quebec.

Requirements

  • F-Class Driver's license or transferable equivalent required by the first day of employment and valid until at least the last day of the contract
  • Experience driving canoe and/or motor boat trailers required
  • At least 10 years driving experience; experience driving 15-passenger vans preferred
  • Experience driving in remote areas, including on roads that may not be well maintained
  • Hands-on experience with basic vehicle maintenance (fluid checks, tire changes) and light mechanical trouble shooting
  • Knowledge of canoe tripping, with knowledge of white-water canoeing considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to change
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment to achieve optimal collective results
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with staff, campers, and the community
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays required

Responsibilities

  • Plan all multi-day driving trips in coordination with the Out-Tripping Coordinator and Directors to ensure drives are scheduled and properly organized in advance of departure
  • Organize travel logistics for multi-day driving trips, including route planning, vehicle checks, overnight travel arrangements, meals, and communication with operations staff
  • Liaise with the Facilities Manager to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and readiness for travel
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with members, staff, volunteers, and community partners
  • Serve as a positive role model for participants and staff by embodying YMCA values and following all camp guidelines, policies, procedures, and Ontario Camps Association standards
  • Undertake multi-day driving trips lasting up to six days
  • Transport participants, staff, and their equipment to designated starting points and retrieve them when the out-trip is complete
  • Perform other duties as assigned
