About The Position

The Extra Help Phlebotomist will work at one of our on-site locations in Southern Illinois, including Central Counties Health Centers in Springfield and Taylorville. This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The Extra Help Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy and related laboratory support services for patients of all ages. Responsibilities include accurately identifying patients, collecting and processing specimens, verifying laboratory orders, and ensuring specimens and requests are complete and accurate. The position also retrieves and enters laboratory orders, verifies patient demographic and insurance information, and performs related functions within the electronic medical record and laboratory information systems to support accurate registration, billing, testing, and specimen processing.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years.

Nice To Haves

Technician-level knowledge of laboratory operations, such as that obtained through graduation from an approved laboratory technician program or equivalent training.
Knowledge of specimen requirements and special handling procedures for laboratory testing.
Familiarity with basic chemical symbols and laboratory specialty areas, including Chemistry, Toxicology, and Microbiology.
Ability to learn and accurately use laboratory codes, patient-location codes, and related terminology.
Understanding of laboratory workflow and the ability to locate pending specimens efficiently.
Knowledge of aseptic technique and standard phlebotomy procedures and equipment.
Familiarity with age-specific psychosocial needs and nonverbal communication cues when interacting with patients of all ages.
Ability to assess patient or parent cooperation and provide appropriate reassurance and support during phlebotomy procedures.
Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Knowledge of procedures for safely handling potentially infectious specimens and preventing contamination.
Proficiency with computers, keyboarding, and relevant laboratory or patient-care information systems.
Ability to monitor supply levels and request or order replacements before supplies are depleted.
Demonstrated compassion, professionalism, and sensitivity when interacting with patients, the public, and medical personnel at all levels.
Spanish-language proficiency is highly desirable to support communication with Spanish-speaking patients served by the hospital and clinics.

Responsibilities

Perform phlebotomy and collect specimens from patients of all ages in accordance with established procedures.
Accurately identify patients and verify laboratory orders prior to specimen collection.
Greet patients and assess their preparedness for requested laboratory testing, including fasting or special dietary requirements.
Provide appropriate instructions to patients who are not adequately prepared for testing and assist with scheduling a return appointment, as needed.
Review specimens and specimen requests for completeness and accuracy.
Process, label, and prepare patient specimens for delivery to the laboratory.
Retrieve laboratory orders from the electronic medical record system and manually enter orders into the laboratory information system (LIS), when necessary.
Perform computer procedures to request, cancel, or credit laboratory tests and verify patient demographic, insurance, registration, and billing information.
Retrieve information through the LIS, respond to appropriate inquiries regarding laboratory results, and trace results that have not yet been posted.
Answer telephone inquiries and refer questions, problems, or concerns to the appropriate supervisor, as needed.
Prioritize and organize work to support patient care and laboratory workflow.
Assess workflow and coordinate with supervisors regarding the need for temporary phlebotomy assistance.
Assist with monitoring expendable supplies, stocking blood-drawing areas, and ordering supplies in the supervisor's absence, as needed.
Occasionally transport patients to clinic areas.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
