The Extra Help/McNair Scholars Research Assistants are students who are responsible for assisting their research mentor with the design concept, methodology, data collection, and analysis of an original research project within the McNair Scholars Program.

Requirements

  • Must be a student at UALR with at least junior classification (60 hours or more)
  • Must be fully accepted in the UALR McNair Scholars Program
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to creatively solve problems
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to receive, apply, and provide constructive feedback

Nice To Haves

  • Participated in research prior to the program, or currently involved in academic research

Responsibilities

  • Propose an original research project that can be reasonably completed in the designated time frame, with the guidance of a UALR faculty mentor
  • Complete said research project, with the guidance of a UALR faculty mentor, adhering to deadlines outlined below
  • Stay up-to-date on CITI training and adhere to UALR IRB expectations
  • Fulfill all requirements associated with academic research with McNair
  • Complete at least 12 hours of work toward my research project each week
  • Maintain a written or computerized log/time report separate from the McNair reports and have them available for review at all Research meetings with McNair staff and my faculty mentor
  • Submit a research report online through the McNair website every other week on deadlines indicated on the McNair Calendar during the time I am engaged in research
  • Meet with my Mentor and the McNair Program Coordinator every other week (minimum) during the Fall and Spring semester
  • Meet with the McNair Director once per month regarding my research progress
  • Complete at least one research presentation representative of my completed McNair Scholars
  • Program research efforts at a research conference during the term of the research opportunity.
