About The Position

Lead strategic communications that make a real impact on patient care and community trust. As the External Communications & Public Affairs Leader, you’ll guide a dynamic team in shaping how Providence Health Care connects with the public. From driving integrated communication strategies and managing social media presence to leading high profile events and building strong external partnerships, you’ll play a key role in telling meaningful stories that reflect our mission and values. You’ll collaborate across the organization to deliver clear, measurable, and timely communications, while fostering a respectful, inclusive, and high performing team environment. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a relevant discipline
  • Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years of Corporate Communication experience in a large multi-site unionized environment, ideally in health care, or an equivalent combination of education, training, professional accreditation and experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles of communication and marketing.
  • Knowledge of social marketing as applied to health care.
  • Knowledge of legislative policy development and processes of various levels of government.
  • Knowledge of current communications and marketing trends, software, and applications, including responsible use of AI and the willingness and ability to implement related new tools and ideas.
  • Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and execute strategic communication plans
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing content across channels (web, social, presentations and written products) for internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and execute events (internal and external) including critical path development, vendor/partner coordination and post-event reporting.
  • Ability to develop and maintain editorial calendars, integrate channels and apply measurement frameworks using analytics and reporting tools.
  • Experience using project/work management tools (e.g., Jira, Smartsheet) to plan work, manage dependencies, and produce dashboards and reports.
  • Experience with budget management, forecasting and financial tracking.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the essence and subtleties of communication in order that exchanges are understood at all levels within a complex stakeholder network (patients, staff, physicians, partners and community).
  • Ability to respond to the needs of external partners supported by an acute awareness of the impact of actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve with a global perspective in order to incorporate the organization’s systems and strategies when developing viable solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish courses of action for self and others that are results oriented.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the value of continuous learning.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the implementation of communication strategies to enhance public awareness, community engagement, and a balanced perception of PHC and its programs.
  • Oversees the development and delivery of external communications, including campaigns, content, and communication vehicles aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Directs event strategy and execution, establishing standardized processes, tools (e.g., Jira/Smartsheet), and tracking systems to ensure successful planning, coordination, and reporting.
  • Manages the editorial calendar and oversees social media and website content, ensuring alignment with content strategy and integration across all external channels.
  • Co-leads the development and execution of an integrated content strategy and annual work plan, identifying risks, opportunities, and measurable outcomes.
  • Identifies health promotion opportunities and emerging issues, developing proactive communication strategies that reflect PHC’s values and priorities.
  • Oversees departmental budget planning and management, including forecasting, tracking expenditures, and ensuring financial accountability.
  • Establishes and leads performance measurement frameworks, including analytics and reporting across web, social media, media, and other communication channels.
  • Provides leadership to the communications team through coaching, performance management, and professional development, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Leads or contributes to corporate projects, committees, and system improvements, advancing innovative tools, processes, and best practices in communications, events, and content delivery.
