About The Position

SIFMA is seeking an extern for the Spring 2027 semester in its State Government Affairs department. The position offers the opportunity to engage directly with state and local issues important to the securities industry and its investors, and to interact with representatives from member firms, outside counsel in many states, and conference speakers and attendees. Continuing education opportunities are also available. This position is for credit only. SIFMA is a trade association for broker-dealers, investment banks, and asset managers operating in U.S. and global capital markets. It advocates on legislation, regulation, and business policy affecting retail and institutional investors, markets, and related products and services. SIFMA also promotes fair and orderly markets, informed regulatory compliance, efficient market operations and resiliency, and provides a forum for industry policy and professional development. It has offices in New York and Washington, D.C., and is the U.S. regional member of the Global Financial Markets Association (GFMA).

Requirements

Be a 2L, 3L, LL.M., or S.J.D. student.
Have a background or interest in regulatory law, administrative law, securities law, or statutory construction.
Have working knowledge of or interest in the legislative process.

State knowledge or background is preferred.

Responsibilities

Monitor and track state and local legislative, regulatory, and public policy initiatives.
Research and analyze legislative and regulatory proposals.
Support education of industry regulators, legislators, executive officials, and staff regarding the current legal framework and practices governing the securities industry and its investors.
Produce internal memoranda on existing laws and pending legislation.
Research and draft legal summaries, position papers or statements, and hearing testimony.
