The Express Desk is looking for a general assignment reporter who can deliver on major breaking news stories in the West Coast and the Pacific region, as well as the delightful, viral stories that are the desk's hallmark. This sprawling, dynamic region is home to tens of millions of people, major industries and military facilities that cover East Asia, making it fertile ground for a reporter with wide-ranging curiosity and a high news metabolism. You will explore regional topics including affordability, homelessness and extreme weather like earthquakes, tsunamis and wildfires, and trending stories that appeal to a broad U.S. and international audience. You will work night or weekend shifts as news demands, with the expectation of developing, reporting and writing multiple stories per week or otherwise contributing to major reporting efforts across the newsroom, including live coverage. This role will suit someone who has a deep knowledge of California or Hawaii, can build relationships across departments and time zones and is a nimble self-starter who can tackle many topics. This is a permanent position and the standard work schedule is five days a week, including at least one weekend day.
