About The Position

The Network Engineer contributes to the design, installation, and operation of the University’s network infrastructure and related services. This position reports to the Senior/Supervising Network Engineer Manager in Networking & Telecommunications. This position works with staff in Information Services and other campus divisions to coordinate services and provide support. The engineer will also work with University vendors and partners, and may coordinate vendor work crews. The activities of this position must support the Mission and Goals of the University and Information Services.

Requirements

  • Has expert-level knowledge and experience in operating network equipment including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, wireless access points and controllers.
  • Has expert-level knowledge in operating network services including DNS and DHCP.
  • Has expert-level knowledge of networking in a cloud-computing context, including network security
  • Keeps current on technology trends, surveys the technical landscape, defines strategy for the campus and telecommunications services, proposes and leads strategic projects
  • Highly skilled technical troubleshooter.
  • Must be able to analyze and solve complex problems.

  • Expert-level knowledge of and experience with fundamental and advanced networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, network services and protocols, VLANs and tagging, routing protocols, VPNs, application protocols and packet shaping), common networking equipment (switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points and controllers, load balancers, VPN appliances) and troubleshooting equipment (packet analyzers, connectivity testers, TDR, OTDR, wireless analyzers).
  • Experienced with a broad range of networking technologies, with senior-level knowledge in at least one of the following areas: Wireless Networking, Network Routing and Switching, Network Security and Services, Voice.
  • Demonstrated expert understanding of network security concepts.
  • Demonstrated expert experience in designing complex, robust, and secure network solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis of vendor solutions in an enterprise context.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others.
  • Strong leadership skills in general, and good understanding of networking/telecommunications role in University business processes.
  • Ability to mentor more less-senior staff.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Works well under limited supervision.
  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of study, or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years experience in the design and operation of communication systems with demonstrated increasing responsibilities.
  • Must be able to handle and operate equipment, which can be located in racks, on tall shelves or in cabinets at heights up to 8 feet or weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces: crawl spaces, vaults, under raised flooring, above ceiling spaces, in and under furniture.
  • Considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer.
  • Travel to other buildings on the campus.
  • May be required to occasionally travel to remote campuses, outside customers, vendors or suppliers.
  • May be required to attend conference and training sessions within Bay Area or in- or out-of-state locations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure
  • Uses expert-level knowledge to design and operate internal and external networks
  • Provides support in maintaining the inventory of network assets, such as switches, routers, access points, and outside/inside copper and fiber plant cabling
  • Provides support in maintaining campus communication rooms
  • Administers services related to the network infrastructure
  • Supports, operates, monitors, tests, and troubleshoots hardware and software problems pertaining to the network
  • Monitors and evaluates the network to identify problems and make improvements
  • Recommends and schedules repairs and updates
  • Performs analysis and resolution for network-related problems
  • Supports other Information Services staff in support of their job functions
  • Serves as a vital technical contributor to, and may lead, complex Networking projects: evaluates and designs solutions, specifies bills of materials, coordinates the work of third-party consultants and contractors, ensures successful implementation of solutions
  • Provides networking-related expertise for other campus groups’ projects, including building construction and renovation
  • Provide end-user customer service and support
  • Provide assistance to customers in the use of the campus data network
  • Ensures proactive notifications to customers about outages, changes, updates, and new features
  • Required to carry a cell phone and to be accessible during off-hours, in rotation
  • Required to work non-standard hours to respond to failures, outages, projects, and scheduled maintenance
  • Accepts that on occasion and depending on the situation will be required to work beyond and in addition to the traditional work schedules, including project work and responding to service failures
  • Required to support the University during emergencies as needed to meet operational requirements
  • Other duties/tasks as assigned by this person’s supervisor or manager
  • May provide direction and/or mentor less-senior network engineers and student workers.
  • Coordinates the work of low-voltage contractors and other third-party work crews.
  • Maintains the operational stability of the University’s network.
  • Designs and deploys changes to the University's network.
  • Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for service improvements.
  • Performs root-cause analysis for service impairments or outages.
  • Develops and presents recommendations to improve established processes and practices.
  • Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of task and project status; and deviation from goals.
  • Ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions.
  • Must be a “self-starter” and be able to proactively identify problems or potential problems and propose creative solutions.
  • The demonstrated ability to adapt to changes while working in a complex technology environment is required.
