About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Experienced Substation Structural Engineer for our Billings, MT office. The following locations will also be considered: Boise, ID; Lakewood, CO. Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Civil Structural Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. This position offers an on‑site, hybrid, or remote work arrangement, depending on candidate location, experience, and business needs. THIS OPPORTUNITY Provides technical leadership and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, improvement, and construction of electrical substations and related power infrastructure. Tasks include leading the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load-bearing structures and structural elements such as substation steel structures, foundations, equipment supports, and ancillary facilities. Substantiates reports and documentation regarding materials, installations, and construction specifications. Ensures responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post‑education experience in structural engineering, including experience supporting utility, power, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
  • Working knowledge of structural engineering principles, analysis methods, and design practices applicable to substation and power infrastructure facilities.
  • Experience supporting the planning, design, and construction of structural components such as foundations, steel structures, or equipment supports.
  • Familiarity with applicable structural design codes, standards, regulations, and quality requirements.
  • Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams and understand client and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical information to engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Effective self‑leadership, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic project environment.
  • Proficiency with engineering and design software relevant to structural engineering (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, structural analysis software, spreadsheets, and technical calculation tools).
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Experience supporting electrical substation or power delivery projects.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, and analyze engineering and project data including site layouts, survey information, geotechnical reports, load criteria, equipment data, drawings, and specifications to support substation structural design.
  • Perform structural engineering work related to substation facilities, including analysis and design of foundations, steel structures, equipment support systems, and associated structural components.
  • Assist with developing structural design concepts, calculations, and detailed drawings in coordination with electrical, civil, and geotechnical disciplines.
  • Apply applicable design codes, standards, and utility criteria (e.g., ACI, AISC, ASCE, local building codes) to ensure compliant and constructible designs.
  • Support the preparation and review of structural calculations, drawings, material quantities, and technical documentation for substation projects.
  • Coordinate with project team members, clients, and stakeholders to support project delivery, respond to design questions, and address constructability considerations.
  • Assist with site visits, field investigations, and construction support activities to verify existing conditions, respond to RFIs, and support resolution of structural design issues.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, calculations, reports, and design documentation to communicate engineering decisions and design intent.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for structural calculations, drawings, and deliverables.
  • Assist in the development and execution of small to medium‑sized substation projects under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, designers, and other professionals on federally, state, locally, and privately funded power delivery projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
