About The Position

This role represents the foundational nursing position at UMMC for professionals with more than 12 months of clinical experience. The Experienced Nurse in the Med Surge/Tele Admission Unit within the Adult Emergency Department (Night Shift) will demonstrate proficiency in the essential skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality patient care. This nurse will actively engage in unit governance, contributing to decision-making processes that enhance clinical practice and operational efficiency. Adherence to the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter is expected, ensuring that all care is delivered in accordance with established standards and ethical guidelines. The nurse will independently provide and coordinate comprehensive care to patients within their clinical specialty, managing complex cases with critical thinking and clinical judgment. As a fully integrated member of the multidisciplinary patient care team, this nurse collaborates effectively with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. They will exemplify the full spectrum of professional nursing practice, not only through direct patient care but also by participating in the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes, enhancing satisfaction with services, and promoting cost-effective care delivery at the unit level. Accountability is a cornerstone of this role; the nurse is responsible to patients and their families for the quality and safety of care throughout each episode of treatment. Additionally, the nurse is accountable to their peers for fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the unit. Reporting to the nurse manager, the nurse is responsible for the comprehensive execution of assigned duties, contributing to the overall success and efficiency of the unit’s operations. Requirements

  • More than 12 months of clinical experience.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligibility to practice under the Nurse Licensure Compact agreements.
  • Maintain a minimum of 10 contact hours of continuing education annually.
  • Recent and relevant clinical experience in a comparable acute care setting, particularly in medical-surgical, telemetry, or emergency department environments.
  • Proven leadership capabilities demonstrated through roles such as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource.
  • Strong collaboration skills to function effectively within diverse healthcare teams.
  • Proficiency in utilizing electronic health record systems and other healthcare technologies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of patient care principles tailored to the specific needs of adult populations served in medical-surgical, telemetry, and emergency settings.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of growth and developmental stages across the lifespan.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication.
  • Commitment to ensuring patient safety.

  • Engage in unit governance, contributing to decision-making processes that enhance clinical practice and operational efficiency.
  • Adhere to the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter, ensuring all care is delivered in accordance with established standards and ethical guidelines.
