About The Position

General Dynamics Electric Boat is a leader in designing, building, and maintaining advanced submarines for the U.S. Navy. Department 471 supports commissioned submarines and training units, providing technical support for modernization and maintenance of the reactor plant. The RPPY Structural Engineering team specifically focuses on ensuring mission readiness for various submarine classes by offering engineering technical support. As an RPPY Structural Engineer, you will provide essential engineering support for Naval Nuclear Power Training Units, including Moored Training Ships and the S8G Prototype. This role involves addressing diverse technical challenges to directly support the commissioned fleet. Beneficial expertise includes structural engineering, submarine arrangements, military and federal specifications, welding, fasteners, material properties, and project management.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Civil, Marine, Materials, or Aerospace engineering
5+ years of engineering experience post graduation
Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DOD) Secret clearance
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required to interface with both internal and external customers
Highly motivated and well organized
Strong project management skills and an interest in mentoring less experienced engineers

Nice To Haves

Experience with finite element analysis
Masters degree in Mechanical, Civil, Marine, Materials, or Aerospace engineering
U.S. Navy experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program

Responsibilities

Act as the lead engineer on ship alterations to support fleet modernization.
Lead engineers overseeing all aspects of alterations, including funding approval, site visits, overall technical quality, maintaining schedules, awareness of budgets, and interfacing with other engineering and design disciplines.
