About The Position

The Exhibit Graphic Designer manages the design process and oversees production of two-dimensional media for Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Working with the Exhibitions Manager, Production Coordinator, curators, contract exhibit designers, and other exhibit team members, this position develops interpretive graphics, gallery text panels, special visual elements, and educational and promotional materials. Designs must be visually cohesive, educationally and historically accurate, and completed within established schedules and budgets. The position develops graphic designs, mockups, and production materials; obtains required approvals for text, images, colors, and graphics; and produces or arranges for illustrations, presentation graphics, and photography. Responsibilities include coordinating with outside contractors, communicating project goals and production requirements, tracking project costs and schedules, and ensuring contracted work meets requirements. The designer also coordinates with Digital Media staff, maintains the large-format printer and printing supplies, and organizes current and archived design files. The Exhibit Graphic Designer designs and produces signage for both museums, maintains consistent graphic styles within permanent galleries, updates the sign inventory, and incorporates sign standards into contracted work. The position maintains and replaces exhibit labels, text panels, murals, and signage; supports donor signage and printed materials for onsite events; and assists with exhibit installation and the handling and transportation of exhibit materials. Work must comply with applicable safety codes, accessibility requirements, and museum standards.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated professional experience in graphic design.
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong design sensibility, conceptual development, typography, layout, color, visual hierarchy, and clear visual communication.
  • Demonstrated experience designing exhibition graphics, including title walls, section panels, timelines, object labels, or other visitor-facing interpretive graphics.
  • Experience creating environmental graphics, directional signs, maps, wayfinding, or spatial graphics that support visitor navigation and engagement.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and experience developing designs from concept through final production.
  • Knowledge and experience preparing files for digital and print production, including color management, pre-press, large-format printing, vinyl, or direct-to-substrate applications.
  • Experience applying accessibility principles, including legibility, typography, contrast, and wayfinding, to exhibition or visitor-facing graphics.
  • Experience collaborating with curators, educators, clients, stakeholders, vendors, or other partners to translate complex information into clear and engaging visual narratives.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple design projects, establish priorities, maintain production schedules, communicate project status, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience preparing specifications and coordinating with printers, fabricators, and other outside vendors through production and delivery.
