About The Position

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by assisting in the rehabilitation of cardiac and pulmonary rehab patients through exercise and education. The Exercise Specialist will assess and evaluate new patients, conduct orientation sessions, assist participants in goal-setting and discharge planning, and determine the progression of exercise programs. They will conduct exercise therapy sessions safely and professionally, provide patient and family education, and demonstrate competency in patient assessment and plan of care, including biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, environmental, self-care, educational, and discharge planning considerations. The role requires competence in implementing the patient's plan of care, writing exercise prescriptions, calculating target heart rate, and conducting educational sessions. The specialist must demonstrate clinical competency within established standards of the American College of Sports Medicine and American Association of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab, and be proficient in responding to emergencies and life-threatening situations, including the management of angina and arrhythmias within the scope of practice. Following Mercy's safety guidelines and promptly reporting unsafe conditions are also key responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support required or may obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab - American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certification as Exercise Specialist required or may obtain within 1 year of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of principles of cardiac and pulmonary disease processes preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Allied Health Field or Nursing, with course work specific to basic exercise science, health promotion, and health risk appraisal techniques highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed.
  • Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
  • Assesses and evaluates new patients at intake into program
  • Conducts orientation session with patient, which includes interpretation of exercise prescription, guidelines for safety, and overview of program.
  • Assists participant in goal-setting during the initial evaluation and throughout the program, and participates in discharge planning.
  • Assists in determining progression of exercise program
  • Conducts exercise therapy session in a safe professional manner.
  • Provides selected classes in patient and family education in areas of expertise.
  • Competent with patient assessment and plan of care including consideration of biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, environmental, self care, educational, and discharge planning.
  • Demonstrates competency in implementing the patient's plan of care, including writing exercise prescriptions, calculating target heart rate, and educational sessions.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency and practices within established standards of the American College of Sports Medicine and American Association of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab
  • Demonstrates competency in responding to emergencies and life threatening situations, including management of angina, and arrhythmias within the scope of the ES practice
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
