This position demonstrates principles of exercise and disease management, practices good clinical judgment, and progresses patients appropriately and safely during exercise. The Exercise Physiologist provides education to patients and families regarding their disease process and demonstrates awareness of their readiness and ability to learn. The role involves performing and documenting physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, identifying appropriate interventions, and writing complete plans of care with specific, time-based goals. The Exercise Physiologist re-evaluates plans of care and exercise programs to determine effectiveness, utilizes critical thinking skills to monitor patient progress, and promptly reports any physical changes to the physician. Additionally, the role involves preparing for patient discharge, ensuring patient and family rehabilitation goals are met, and displaying knowledge of patient resources and needs. The position also contributes to improving departmental standards of care through updating educational materials and providing inservices to staff. The Exercise Physiologist organizes patient treatment time, provides patient education, and documents all aspects of patient care and continued need for rehabilitation. Errors are reported promptly with appropriate follow-up action. The role serves as a patient and family advocate, responds to complaints, and reports them to management. The Exercise Physiologist utilizes the chain of command to resolve issues, assists willingly in coverage of other patients, performs insurance verification, and assists with departmental paperwork. Participation in performance improvement activities, attending staff meetings and mandatory educational sessions, and assisting in the training and education of students and/or graduate nurses are also key responsibilities.
