About The Position

The Executive Vice President for Health Affairs (EVPHA) will hold overall responsibility and authority for research and education across the health sciences at the University of Florida. This role involves developing and implementing a strategic vision for UF's health colleges, centers, and institutes, fostering excellence in research and education, and ensuring the financial soundness and efficient operation of these programs. The EVPHA will collaborate with college deans and senior leaders, reporting to the President, and will cultivate an environment of respect, innovation, and transparency. Additionally, the position requires building strong relationships with external stakeholders, including alumni, donors, and government leaders, to advocate for the health sciences' missions and lead fundraising initiatives. The EVPHA will oversee the expansion and transformation of educational and research enterprises, improve the quality and quantity of research, and support innovative educational strategies to enhance the growth, reputation, and impact of UF's health colleges and clinical enterprise.

Requirements

  • Executive Leadership in Complex Academic Environments: Substantial and progressive leadership experience within the academic health sciences as dean, institute director or other broadly scaled leadership role, with responsibility for strategy development and implementation, educational and research program development, and financial management
  • Research and Education Leadership: Personal success in establishing and expanding an institutional research program in the health sciences, including strategic development and implementation in collaboration with scholars and practitioners outside the candidate’s own field; success developing and leading multidisciplinary educational programs in collaboration with other university or institutional leaders.
  • Operational Acumen: Demonstrated managerial abilities and enthusiasm for the administrative and financial responsibilities of the position, with understanding of the financial pressures facing academic health centers and health care delivery organizations and the principles of mission-based budgeting and funds flow.
  • External Leadership and Engagement: Demonstrated success representing a complex academic health enterprise and building strong relationships with external stakeholders, including donors, alumni, community partners, government leaders and other key constituencies. Experience leading philanthropic engagement and fundraising efforts while effectively advancing institutional priorities at the state and federal levels.
  • Personal Scholarship: Strong preference for a physician-scientist or clinician-scientist with a strong record of scholarship, including a record of substantial, extramural peer-reviewed funding and national/international recognition; academic credentials sufficient to engender respect within the University of Florida and UF Health and support appointment as a tenured full professor.
  • Acting Strategically: The EVPHA will partner with constituent deans and UF/UF Health senior leaders to develop, refine and execute a strategy that optimizes UF’s scholarship in the health sciences and contributions to the clinical mission by: Clearly articulating the future direction and ideal culture of the organization while leading by example and challenging established practices, as necessary. Identifying and prioritizing critical factors in making strategic decisions affecting the university’s health colleges and programs. Discovering, creating and expanding synergies between colleges in the health sciences. Pursuing revenue-enhancing opportunities through new or expanded education/research offerings. Addressing opportunities in the larger research landscape to enhance UF’s position as a leading AAU institution. Identifying and pursuing opportunities to advance the health sciences through philanthropy, government partnerships and other external sources of support.
  • Collaborating and Influencing: The EVPHA will develop relationships with all stakeholders to effectively guide the health sciences’ contributions to UF and UF Health by: Demonstrating appreciation for all the health sciences and supporting inter-college collaboration while championing collective activity across all UF entities. Connecting productively within the health sciences enterprise, with the broader university, and across UF Health to develop long-term collaborations and partnerships. Developing a culture that respects, values and promotes the dignity of UF’s students, staff, faculty and stakeholders. Building and maintaining productive relationships with donors, alumni, government leaders, policymakers and other external stakeholders, working in partnership with university leadership, advancement and government relations to advance UF and UF Health priorities.
  • Leading Transformation: The EVPHA should be able to thrive in a complex, fast-paced institution that is executing change on multiple fronts while balancing complementary and competing priorities and be prepared to lead the academic mission of UF’s health sciences by: Identifying and leading changes necessary to advance education and research in the health sciences, embracing transformational initiatives (e.g., Artificial Intelligence at UF, Drug Discovery at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology) to elevate the stature and productivity of the university. Adapting agreed-upon plans to the political realities, strengths and constraints of the university, health system and state, engaging with all relevant stakeholders to gain necessary buy-in through customized influence efforts. Establishing practices that encourage and reinforce innovation and impact new thinking in UF’s health colleges, institutes and centers.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, articulates, resources and implements a strategic vision for the University of Florida’s health colleges, centers and institutes that supports the university’s and UF Health’s strategic plans.
  • Holds overall responsibility and authority for research and education across the health sciences.
  • Fosters and supports excellence in basic, clinical and translational research programs in the health colleges and their contributions across the university.
  • Leverages the educational and research strengths of UF health sciences in alignment with the clinical mission of UF Health.
  • Ensures the university’s health colleges and related programs are operated in a financially sound manner, and that capital and other investments are used efficiently.
  • Develops a structured process to optimize decision-making and outcomes.
  • With the UF Health President/System CEO and the UF President, develops and administers financial models supporting the clinical, educational and research missions of the health sciences.
  • Leads collaboration with the health sciences’ college deans and other senior leaders.
  • Provides leadership and direction for UF’s academic programs in the health sciences.
  • Develops and fosters an environment of respect, competence, transparency, innovation and principle-driven management.
  • Ensures that interdisciplinary collaborations enhancing educational and research programs in the health sciences are encouraged and supported.
  • Supports and champions collaboration across all of UF.
  • Cultivates strong, credible and trusting relationships with alumni, donors, government leaders and related external stakeholders in support of the educational, research and clinical missions of UF and UF Health.
  • Advocates for the initiatives of constituent units in the health sciences.
  • Acts as an effective representative and spokesperson for the health sciences at the university.
  • Plans and executes fundraising initiatives pertaining to the health sciences in support of college and university activities.
  • Plays a leadership role in fundraising for the academic health center (UF Health overall), leading efforts in the university’s capital campaign to support the organization’s growth and strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee successful expansion and successful transformation of the educational and basic, translational and clinical research enterprises of the health sciences at the university in alignment with UF and UF Health goals.
  • Ensure growth is coordinated with inter-university initiatives and contributes to revenue-enhancing strategies, e.g., through new educational program offerings, strategic recruitment of outstanding research groups and integration of research opportunities into clinical care and population health.
  • Improve quality and quantity of basic, translational, clinical and population-based health sciences research and expand research activity to increase the overall impact of UF’s research enterprise.
  • Foster collaborative, programmatic research programs that encompass health science and non-health science colleges, institutes and centers.
  • Continue development and implementation of an innovative and interprofessional educational strategy.
  • Support the health colleges’ education and training initiatives.
  • Enable greater achievement in workforce development through support of initiatives across the health sciences at the University of Florida.
  • Promote the growth, reputation and impact of the health colleges and the clinical enterprise by enhancing education and research, including the development of innovative educational strategies and development of novel prevention and therapeutic programs.
