About The Position

The Executive Vice President, Advocacy is a senior position reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for overseeing the Association’s public policy development and advocacy execution. The successful candidate will be a member of the senior management team, working with the President and CEO and the COO to execute the Association’s strategic plan. The position will also interact regularly with Board members, senior industry leaders, heads of Washington offices, and senior government officials and policy makers. The position will encompass both legislative and regulatory policy matters directly engaging with other groups within SIFMA in the execution of their policy goals. Further, the position must actively engage and coordinate with communications and research as part of the advocacy agenda. SIFMA is seeking a proven leader with the capacity and ability to have a broad impact on the Association and the U.S. securities industry. This role is central to the value SIFMA provides its members and vital to the success of the industry.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to build an effective, efficient, and proactive advocacy program. Able to build relationships and use influence effectively in a variety of settings, both within the organization and with external constituencies, including members, public officials, other trade associations or key stakeholders.
  • Experience leading teams of relevant size and scope. Ability to manage cross-functional and motivate individuals charged with advancing goals related to complex public policy issues.
  • Experience in the financial services industry or other highly regulated industries. Relevant subject matter expertise in financial services and/or in areas of importance to SIFMA and its members.
  • Strong network on Capitol Hill, regulatory agencies, the administration, and other relevant stakeholder organizations. Deep understanding of how to be effective in each of these environments.
  • Proven ability to develop a comprehensive government affairs vision and strategic plan for an organization or company and then execute to deliver results, driving positive results.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or support legislative, regulatory, and executive branch advocacy efforts for the industry’s key policy positions to relevant government bodies including Members of Congress and their staff and federal government agencies, drawing on a strong background in and understanding of the financial services industry.
  • Develop a comprehensive government affairs vision and strategic plan and then execute to deliver results, driving positive change for the organization and, ultimately, the industry.
  • Aggressively educate Members of Congress, regulators, and policy makers on SIFMA member issues and raise SIFMA’s profile with key stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage relationships with SIFMA’s member-company government relations teams and establish SIFMA’s advocacy strategy based on their priorities and needs. This includes proactive and frequent communication, keeping them apprised of important developments, hosting meetings and regular contact to ensure consistent flow of information.
  • Serve as a senior leader within the organization, coordinating and working closely with other senior executives as a member of the Operating and Management Committees to align advocacy efforts with the broader organization strategy and business priorities.
  • Establish contact and serve as liaison with other trade associations and interest groups on common policy issues and campaigns.
  • Create and manage programs to familiarize Congress and government agencies with the U.S. securities industry.
  • Engage with Communications team to help with messaging on important policy and political issues.
  • Strategically engage and leverage the whole organization to achieve industry’s public policy goals.
