About The Position

Liberty Mutual Canada is seeking a Surety Executive Underwriter for our National Accounts’ team to join our Toronto office. In this role, you will be responsible for marketing, underwriting, and servicing a portfolio of clients across Canada. Leveraging your strong relationship-building skills, you will develop and maintain long-term partnerships with brokers and clients, focusing on sustainable growth rather than transactional sales. You will apply your financial and business acumen to conduct in-depth credit underwriting, perform financial and risk analysis, and make informed decisions on both new and existing accounts. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and Surety underwriting experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive Surety underwriting experience, including strong Contract Surety expertise and a proven ability to manage complex risks and portfolios.
  • Advanced financial analysis and risk assessment skills, including the ability to evaluate financial statements, credit profiles, cash flow, and industry trends to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Demonstrated success in business development, broker and client relationship management, and profitable portfolio growth.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and build credibility with clients, brokers, and senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, coupled with strong knowledge of economic, financial, and market conditions.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong understanding of technical Surety underwriting principles, risk management practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and brokers by providing strategic underwriting guidance, reviewing account performance, and identifying opportunities to enhance portfolio profitability and growth.
  • Develop, manage, and grow a diversified surety portfolio while building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, brokers, and key industry stakeholders.
  • Execute portfolio growth strategies aligned with underwriting appetite, business objectives, regulatory requirements, and established underwriting guidelines.
  • Conduct comprehensive financial analysis of private and public organizations, including evaluation of financial statements, cash flow, interim reporting, and work-in-progress schedules to assess risk, establish underwriting positions, and monitor emerging trends.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, account action plans, and exit strategies for accounts demonstrating adverse financial or operational performance.
  • Analyze risk exposures and structure appropriate surety solutions, terms, conditions, and capacity based on financial strength, operational performance, industry trends, and economic conditions.
  • Manage an assigned book of business by evaluating quantitative and qualitative risk factors to ensure portfolio quality, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
  • Exercise sound underwriting judgment and delegated authority while ensuring compliance with corporate guidelines, risk management standards, and underwriting governance requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve complex underwriting, accounting, and operational issues in accordance with Liberty Mutual Surety's underwriting philosophy, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead and participate in client, broker, prospect, and industry meetings to provide underwriting expertise, strengthen market presence, and support business development efforts.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including underwriting, claims, finance, legal, and distribution teams, to deliver exceptional client service and achieve business objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies, and the Underwriting Controls Framework while maintaining the highest standards of underwriting integrity.
  • Contribute to account planning, relationship management, cross-selling initiatives, strategic projects, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment by partnering across functions and regions to support organizational goals.
  • Travel - as required to support business objectives, including client meetings, conferences, and company events.
