About The Position

The Executive Underwriter, Personal Lines role focuses on refining and applying advanced knowledge of underwriting theory and practices to larger and more complex risks. This position involves building strong broker relationships to generate growth, applying advanced sales and negotiation skills to maximize revenue, and deepening understanding of the company’s products, capabilities, and business strategy. The role also requires developing creative underwriting solutions for complex risks, potentially using wholesale markets and partnering with other brands. Additionally, the Executive Underwriter will set a strong example, contribute to product and program development, and mentor less experienced team members.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in personal lines underwriting or 10 years personal lines brokering experience.
  • Actively working towards an insurance designation (CIP or CAIP preferred).
  • Hold a broker license (Level 1 or 2), or can qualify for a license within 90 days.
  • Have existing relationships within the industry you can leverage to attract business opportunities and grow your portfolio.
  • Have advanced knowledge in one of our business segments and/or lines of business.
  • Can lead a business development meeting with a broker to strengthen the existing relationship and prospect for new opportunities.
  • Have attended insurance industry events, such as broker conventions and networking events.
  • Can type a minimum of 40 works per minute.
  • Technical competency with office equipment including printers, scanners.
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in Department Underwriting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources for the purpose of quoting, negotiating and authorizing the renewal of existing policies and acceptance of new opportunities for risks of a moderate to high complexity based on guidelines and retention goals of the company.
  • Develop and support professional business partnerships with brokers by providing prompt service, responding to inquiries, acting pro-actively and taking ownership of issues and resolving them with a solution-oriented approach.
  • Pursue and achieve production targets.
  • Make decisions based on imperfect information.
  • Communicate decisions and respond in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry related seminars and networking events as necessary.
  • Negotiate coverage with brokers within and delegated authority parameters.
  • Manage, strengthen and grow a book of profitable business.
  • Handle endorsement requests within delegated authority. Independently engages with broker to clarify intent of the request or seek missing information.
  • Maintain compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters.
  • Work independently to meet deadlines following company guidelines to accomplish goals.
  • Take ownership of work-related activities and follow through on your commitments.
  • Deal effectively with pressure, maintains a positive outlook and recover quickly from setbacks.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks to deliver desired outcomes within allocated time frames.

  • Maintain and update underwriting materials and manuals to ensure guidelines remain current, accurate, and reflective of best practices.
  • Refine and apply advanced knowledge of underwriting theory and practices to larger and more complex risks.
  • Build strong broker relationships that generate growth opportunities within your segment and across the business.
  • Apply advanced sales and negotiation skills to maximize revenue from every account and prospect for new opportunities.
  • Continue building a broader and richer understanding of the company’s products, capabilities and business strategy.
  • Develop and apply creative underwriting solutions for more complex risks including the use of wholesale markets (Lloyd’s of London and domestic) and partnering with other SPGC brands (i3 Underwriting or Beacon).
  • Set a strong example and model best practices for others.
  • Contribute to product and program development, including wording updates, program enhancements, and carrier/capacity discussions with management.
  • Subscribing to online newsletters and publications, visit industry websites, and monitor social media channels to broaden your industry knowledge.
  • Increasing & expanding your engagement within your insurance network.
  • Connecting and networking within insurance industry.
  • Completing an industry recognized designation (CAIB, CIP, CRM) or pursuing an advanced designation (FCIP, ACIP, Canadian Managing General Agent Program).
