About The Position

The Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies seeks an accomplished, visionary Executive Director who brings a rare blend of scientific credibility, operational excellence, and strategic leadership to a world-class research environment. The ideal candidate is a distinguished researcher—preferably a PhD or MD, with surgical expertise strongly valued—who understands the rigor and pace of complex preclinical and translational research. This leader will possess a demonstrated ability to guide high-performing teams in demanding, high-pressure settings, while also serving as a principal investigator or collaborator driving innovative research initiatives. Success in this role requires a proven track record in building and sustaining meaningful partnerships with industry, academia, and external stakeholders, with the ability to attract funding, develop new projects, and expand the Institute’s research portfolio. The Executive Director will be equally adept at managing the business of a sophisticated research facility—overseeing budgets, compliance, operations, and staff—while advancing strategic priorities and positioning the Institute as a premier destination for biomedical device development, imaging, and translational science. Above all, we seek a dynamic, forward-thinking leader who can bridge medicine, research, and industry to elevate the Institute’s impact and reputation on a national and global stage.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical/medical fields and or other related fields of study.
  • Ten years of years of administrative and technical management experience in medical/research facilities or related experience, including experience with compliance issues, project management, finance, and operations.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD and or MD in biomedical/medical fields and or other related fields of study or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Experience in leading surgical operations and management of associated staff/technicians in a high-pressure environment.
  • Understanding of research protocol development and in serving as principal investigator on research projects.
  • Research/Experience related to biomedical device(s) development, medical and imaging applications, and regulatory process related to FDA submissions.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience establishing and sustaining public and private industry partnerships, focusing on broader research/educational opportunities and collaborative investments.
  • More than ten years of administrative and technical management experience in medical/research facilities or related experience, including experience with compliance issues, project management, finance, and operations.
  • Boarded Surgical Certifications.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory issues associated with preclinical project development and use and the ability to apply such regulations to programs and facilities.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of advanced surgical techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff, groups of various sizes and backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and evaluates departmental operations, including planning and coordinating various functions.
  • Ensures that Texas A&M University Institute of Preclinical Studies (TIPS) has appropriate programmatic oversight and resources.
  • Supervises staff, ensuring effective departmental performance.
  • Leads the development and execution of short-term and long-term departmental goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates the administration of departmental programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with department and Division of Research goals.
  • Serves as an advisor/consultant to the Associate Vice President and Vice President for Research in all matters pertaining to the TIPS.
  • Develops and implements internal controls and process compliance to ensure smooth operations.
  • Participates in training and professional development sessions to enhance leadership skills and department performance.
  • Engages in collaborative and independent, service-directed applied research, including international collaborations.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with faculty at Texas A&M and other research institutions.
  • Serves as capture manager to identify and organize assigned preclinical projects; writes grants for facility projects; and serves as principal investigator as appropriate on projects.
  • Leads the development and oversight of communications, promotions, and public relations for the department.
  • Serves on relevant committees as assigned.
  • Oversees fiscal operations, establishing and maintaining cost controls for departmental budgets.
  • Manages strategic planning and the development of integrated programs to achieve long-term goals.
  • Recommends and develops new departmental policies or revisions to existing policies to enhance operations.
  • Stays abreast of developments in the field to inform budget and strategic decisions.
