About The Position

This is a leadership role where you will lead the technology function across engineering, delivery, and operations. You will set the standard, make critical decisions, grow the team, manage the work, and be accountable to the business for its deliverables. In addition to leadership, you will actively contribute to the codebase, shipping code every week as part of a small, hands-on team. You will report to the SVP, Design, Product and Technology, working closely with them daily to shape technical strategy, including architecture direction, build-versus-buy decisions, and platform evolution. You will also serve as the technology counterpart to editorial and commercial leadership, with a broad remit that includes delivery, technical program management, the operational layer, business systems, and vendor management. The team under your leadership is expected to grow to reflect this expanded scope. This role is based in the United States and is fully remote.

Requirements

  • 5+ years leading technical teams, including managing engineers directly and managing through other managers.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and exiting people, setting team standards, and being accountable for team deliverables.
  • Ability to contribute as an individual contributor, writing and shipping production code regularly.
  • Experience owning delivery, operations, vendor relationships, and stakeholder commitments.
  • Ability to translate business intent into technical solutions, including cost and impact analysis.
  • Real backend and infrastructure depth, with accountability for work not directly written.
  • Experience working with designers who ship their own code.
  • Experience directing contractors and vendors and holding their output to a high standard.
  • Ability to be a thinking partner, engaging in strategic discussions and committing to decisions.
  • Comfortable being the technical voice among editorial and commercial leaders.
  • TypeScript, Node.js, modern tooling.
  • Payload CMS on PostgreSQL, or equivalent depth in a headless, code-first CMS.
  • Content modeling and API design (GraphQL and REST).
  • Next.js, and Astro with React islands.
  • Application security (authentication, authorization, secrets management, dependency hygiene, least privilege).
  • LLM-native workflow experience.
  • Depth in identity and payments (SSO/OIDC, Stripe, entitlements, paywall logic).
  • AWS experience (Lambda via OpenNext, S3, CloudFront, IAM, RDS) and containers on Kubernetes.
  • Security operations experience (attack surface and asset inventory, decommissioning, access lifecycle, credential rotation, logging).
  • Incident response experience (containment, evidence, reporting).
  • Privacy and compliance experience (GDPR, CCPA, consent, tracking, data retention).
  • Experience with PHP, MySQL, Python/FastAPI, Elasticsearch, message brokers.

Nice To Haves

  • A background in media or publishing is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the technology team across engineering, delivery, and operations, owning the people management aspects including hiring, performance, development, and managing through a manager as the function scales.
  • Shape the technical strategy with the SVP, focusing on architecture direction, build/buy/integrate decisions, and future platform direction, while owning the thinking and subsequent delivery.
  • Translate product direction into shipped work, owning the entire process from scoping and technical requirements to sequencing and commitments to stakeholders.
  • Run delivery across the technology function, managing cadence, dependencies, and visibility for the company.
  • Be accountable for team deliverables, setting standards, reviewing architecture, and implementing mechanisms to prevent production issues.
  • Ship code every week, carrying real work such as complex problems and direction-setting spikes.
  • Stand up new products and evolve existing ones across news, subscriptions, identity, data, and events, including managing the wind-down of legacy systems.
  • Lead security across all operations, including attack surface, access control, third-party risk, and incident response.
  • Own the content and data spine, including content modeling, CMS management, API development, and MCP services.
  • Own the operational layer, including environments, CI/CD, previews, observability, and the production pipeline.
  • Own internal systems and tooling, including CRM, events, email, subscriptions, and data services.
  • Direct contractors and vendors, holding their output to the same standard as internal work.
  • Ensure AI-assisted work from non-engineers is deployed effectively and its soundness is evaluated.
  • Partner with editorial and business leadership to deliver features at the pace required by a newsroom.
  • Translate technical concepts for non-technical leaders and vice versa.
