About The Position

The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous communities, the federal government, industry, and other stakeholders to promote social and economic opportunities to enhance the quality of life of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta. The Métis landscape in Alberta includes the Metis Settlements, the Metis Settlements General Council, Credibly Asserted Métis Communities, the Métis Nation of Alberta and other independent Métis communities. The Alberta government’s Métis Relations branch works to strengthen relationships between provincial departments and Métis communities. It supports policy development, engagement and collaboration on initiatives that advance Métis interests, including emergency response, economic participation and cultural preservation.

Requirements

• Extensive senior management experience leading teams in complex and dynamic environments.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities, associations, and organizations.
• Strong understanding of Indigenous issues, particularly those affecting Métis people and communities.
• Strong skills in collaboration, stakeholder engagement, negotiation, strategic planning, conflict resolution, and financial management.
• Politically astute.
• Proven ability to build trusted relationships.
• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Indigenous Studies, social sciences or political sciences.

Responsibilities

• Overall management and strategic direction of the Métis Relations Branch, including the Métis Relations, Métis Settlements Land Registry, and Métis Settlements Appeal Tribunal work units.
• Provide leadership in the development and implementation of plans, programs, policies, and agreements that support the socio-economic well-being of Métis people in Alberta.
• Oversee the negotiation and implementation of formal agreements.
• Lead cross-ministry initiatives.
• Ensure Métis perspectives are reflected in government decision-making.
• Provide oversight of branch operations and related services while advancing key Métis priorities across the province.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, including the Métis Settlements General Council, the Métis Nation of Alberta, government partners, communities, and related organizations.
• Provide strategic advice and recommendations to senior leadership.
• Support progress on Métis priorities throughout Alberta through strong collaboration, communication, and stakeholder engagement.
