About The Position

The Company Utica National Insurance Group, with 1,400 employees countrywide, is an "A" rated $2.0B award-winning, nationally recognized property & casualty insurance carrier operating along the Eastern half of the United States. This role is based in our Home Office in Central New York, with Regional Office locations including NYC, Dallas and Charlotte. Commercial Lines Underwriters are responsible for underwriting risk, including making decisions on complex risks to apply insurance rules and regulations in accordance with guidelines. This role involves managing a high-volume agency assignment with increased authority limits. The underwriter will prepare material for agency reviews and collaborate with the account underwriter on agency production and loss ratio improvement plans. Responsibilities include underwriting commercial lines insurance policies such as General Liability, Worker's Compensation, Property, and Commercial Auto insurance, covering account exposures like Contractor, Wholesaler, Retail, Restaurant, and Manufacturers. The role requires evaluating risks, determining appropriate coverage, and ensuring customer satisfaction. The underwriter's primary responsibility is to protect the organization's assets by monitoring and influencing the book of business. Pro-active analysis and execution of agency action plans are key to improving the book of business and ensuring company profitability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Commercial Lines Middle Market Underwriting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of General Liability, Worker's Compensation, Property, and Commercial Auto lines of business.
  • Proven track record of successful underwriting and portfolio management in the middle market segment.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Proactive, resourceful, and customer-focused candidate for working with agency partners.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and evaluates new submissions and renewal accounts to determine acceptability of the risk within parameters outlined within the Underwriting Authority CL Underwriter Document.
  • Reviews, interprets and processes data from various sources, including application forms and loss history.
  • Articulates and practices principles of risk management, including knowledge of exposure/hazard identification and control.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of understanding and familiarity with competitor's price and product.
  • Clearly communicates appetite, underwriting standards, declination reasons, and coverage advantages to Agents and internal partners to ensure profitability and generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention.
  • Cultivates strong business relationships (internal and external) by proactively communicating and conveying ownership and commitment.
  • Anticipates and meets the needs of customers and readily adjusts priorities to respond to pressing and changing client requirements.
  • Manages a high-volume agency assignment with increased authority limits at expected quality control results.
  • Analyzes the 'agents' book of business, through risk characteristics profile/evaluation, to determine correction action(s) or opportunities to generate profitable growth.
  • Completes understanding of management information data (i.e. Power BI).
  • Possesses strong understanding of the Commercial Lines marketplace/products.
  • Prepares material for agency reviews and works with the account underwriter on agency production and loss ratio improvement plans.
