The Exceptional Children's Teacher is responsible for planning, instructing, and organizing instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills contributing to their educational and social development. This role requires adherence to all Board Policies and procedures, and compliance with supervisor instructions. The teacher demonstrates leadership in the classroom and school, takes responsibility for student learning, uses data to plan and set goals, and establishes a safe and orderly environment. They collaborate with school personnel to create a professional learning community, analyze data, and develop goals through the school improvement plan. Additionally, teachers contribute to the teaching profession by promoting positive working conditions and participating in decision-making structures. They advocate for schools and students, promote positive change in policies affecting student learning, and participate in initiatives to improve education. Teachers must demonstrate high ethical standards, know the content they teach, align instruction with the Common Core, develop strategies to make the curriculum rigorous and relevant, and promote literacy and math skills. They should also incorporate life skills, leadership, ethics, accountability, adaptability, personal productivity, personal responsibility, and people skills. A key aspect of this role involves understanding special education policies and procedures, collaborating with regular education teachers, developing and following IEPs, and maintaining compliant confidential records and paperwork, including collecting ongoing assessment data on individual student goals.
