About The Position

MVP Air Conditioning, Heating, Plumbing and Electric is seeking a skilled Excavator Operator specializing in residential site work, utility trenching, and exterior plumbing repairs for their team in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The role involves managing site preparation, trenching, and excavation for residential water, sewer, and gas line projects. This position requires precision operation of compact and mid-sized excavators, a strong understanding of underground utility safety, and the ability to collaborate with plumbing and HVAC teams to ensure safe and efficient project completion. Requirements

  • Proven experience operating excavators and heavy equipment, specifically in tight-access residential environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of soil types, trench safety, and underground utility protection.
  • Valid state-issued Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to read site plans and follow laser levels or grade stakes.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs, work in various weather conditions, and assist with manual labor (shoveling/piping) when not operating equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • CDL Class A or B is a significant plus.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Safety Certification.
  • Previous experience specifically in Sewer & Water excavation.
  • Experience hauling equipment using trailers and heavy-duty trucks.
  • Knowledge of Kansas City metro soil conditions and local excavation permitting.

Responsibilities

  • Skillfully operate mini-excavators, backhoes, and skid steers to perform trenching, grading, and digging for residential utility lines.
  • Excavate trenches for water service lines, sewer lateral repairs/replacements, and gas lines, ensuring proper depth and bedding per code.
  • Strictly adhere to "Call Before You Dig" (811) requirements, visually verify utility marks, and hand-expose sensitive lines when necessary to prevent strikes.
  • Backfill trenches using proper lifts and compaction techniques to prevent future settling and perform basic site restoration to return the customer’s property to a clean state.
  • Perform daily pre-trip inspections, greasing, and basic preventative maintenance on machinery, and report any mechanical issues immediately.
  • Assist the plumbing team with the physical installation of piping or shoring as needed while outside the cab.
  • Follow all OSHA excavation standards, including proper sloping, benching, and use of trench shields.
  • Accurately log hours, equipment usage, and job site conditions using company-provided technology.
