EW Technique Development & Test Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Lexington Park, MD

About The Position

The EW Technique Development & Test Engineer develops, integrates, tests, and assesses prototype capabilities and electronic warfare techniques for next-generation EW systems. The work supports U.S. and allied ability to operate effectively in contested RF environments and includes developing techniques, transitioning concepts into testable capabilities, and evaluating performance. The engineer collaborates with systems engineers, algorithm developers, FPGA and embedded-software engineers, and EW specialists. Projects span EW technique development, RF testing and integration, and analysis of radar and communications systems. The role also involves communicating technical findings, test results, and recommendations to sponsors and APL staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a concentration in signal processing, embedded software, FPGA design, RF design, or a related discipline.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in EW technique development, RF test and integration, or related RF systems engineering.
  • Strong C++ programming experience.
  • Strong MATLAB or Python programming experience.
  • Strong familiarity with RF test equipment, including signal generators and spectrum analyzers.
  • Basic experience performing SWaP analyses and building and maintaining RF budgets.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret-level clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain a TS/SCI-level security clearance; eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least ten years of experience in EW technique development, RF test and integration, or related RF systems engineering.
  • Experience with FPGA design, particularly Xilinx Vivado and Vitis.
  • Experience developing and testing EW systems.
  • Experience with signal processing for radar and communications systems.
  • Experience using Git/GitLab, Java, Linux environments, and writing shell scripts.

Responsibilities

  • Study current and emerging radar and communications systems to evaluate performance and identify opportunities for EW technique development and hardware or software innovation.
  • Develop EW techniques, integrate prototype hardware and software capabilities, test novel concepts, and evaluate performance and effectiveness.
  • Design, conduct, and analyze laboratory tests and demonstrations to characterize EW technique and system performance.
  • Build and maintain RF budgets and conduct basic size, weight, and power (SWaP) analyses.
  • Communicate technical findings, test results, and recommendations to sponsors and APL staff.

Benefits

  • Robust education assistance program and education assistance.
  • Retirement plans and unparalleled retirement contributions.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
  • Training and development.
  • Potential sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance, subject to eligibility or policy.
