About The Position

The EVS Tech I is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting assigned areas within Advocate South Suburban Hospital and/or off-site facilities. This includes patient rooms, offices, restrooms, and other common areas. The role involves operating various equipment, using chemicals safely, maintaining a clean and orderly work environment, and ensuring customer satisfaction through effective communication and conflict resolution. The position also requires adherence to strict infection control policies, including proper bed making, room sanitization after patient discharges, and meticulous handwashing. Additionally, the EVS Tech I prepares cleaning solutions, performs floor care, shampoos furniture and carpets, manages waste disposal, and ensures a safe and attractive environment for patients, visitors, and associates.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience
  • Basic computer skills preferred
  • Able to operate small electrical equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, including reading and comprehending chemical labels and other safety materials

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect assigned areas, including walls, doors, ceilings, patient televisions, windows, furniture, floors, and equipment using appropriate cleaning solutions and following specific schedules.
  • Operate various cleaning equipment according to department procedures.
  • Use chemicals and solutions following department policy and ensuring they are in properly labeled containers.
  • Keep work areas in an orderly, clean, and safe condition.
  • Utilize AIDET with both internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and resolve interpersonal conflicts constructively.
  • Display a positive, supportive attitude to patient families and other personnel.
  • Maintain patient and departmental confidentiality.
  • Utilize the appropriate chain of command for resolving complaints or problems.
  • Thoroughly wash and sanitize beds and make beds with clean linen after patient discharges.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize entire rooms and washrooms after patient discharges.
  • Select and transport appropriate cleaning materials and supplies to the work area.
  • Replenish supplies such as paper towels, toilet tissues, and soap.
  • Routinely collect waste and sanitize garbage cans.
  • Observe and follow Standard (Universal) Precautions, Infection Control Policies, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Clean or sanitize after emergency spills as requested.
  • Place full, tied bags of soiled linen in linen chutes.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for patients, visitors, and associates.
  • Wash hands thoroughly throughout the day and adhere to the Hospital handwash policy.
  • Prepare detergents, germicidal solutions, and other cleaning/disinfecting solutions according to established formulas.
  • Sweep, dust mop, and wet mop floor areas and spot clean carpets.
  • Shampoo furniture, carpets, and rugs using appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Identify types of soiling and utilize proper solutions as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to safety regulations as outlined in departmental policy and procedure.
  • Move equipment and furniture for cleaning, rearrangement, and/or relocation.
  • Arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion after cleaning assigned areas.
  • Arrange furniture for meetings, workshops, and community affairs according to specifications.
  • Clean equipment and notify the supervisor of equipment needing repair.
  • Appropriately report safety hazards.
  • Return unused supplies to the closet, clean carts and equipment, and ensure all items are replaced in an orderly manner.
  • Collect and/or distribute soiled and/or clean linens as required.
  • Collect hazardous and medical waste according to procedures established by the Infection Control Committee.
  • Sanitize all garbage/waste disposal containers.
  • Separate regular and recycle trash according to procedure.
  • Attend all mandatory departmental and hospital meetings and inservices.
  • Complete annual CBT's required.
  • Follow written department goals and objectives.
  • Seek education and learning experiences in areas of identified growth needs.
  • Maintain proper attendance requirements outlined in the Hospital Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Plan for special days off in advance and submit written requests for time off.
  • Request PTO time in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Provide adequate notice for absences and call two hours before the beginning of the shift if absent.
