About The Position

The Evidence Technician may be assigned to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Impound Facility or Evidence Warehouse. The role collects and manages evidence, property, and items designated for destruction, maintaining secure handling, accurate records, and strict chain-of-custody accountability. The position may be subject to budget-required furloughs during calendar year 2026. Evidence Warehouse duties include receiving, transporting, tracking, storing, releasing, and preparing evidence and property for destruction. Work involves handling and securing varied items—including firearms, narcotics, biological materials, and homicide evidence—while following applicable laws, directives, policies, and safety requirements. The technician also serves internal and external customers, supports law enforcement and court requests, participates in audits, and may testify in court. Impound Facility duties focus primarily on the intake, inspection, documentation, storage, and release or auction of impounded vehicles and related property. The technician verifies vehicle and case information, performs certified VIN inspections, prepares legally required notifications and paperwork, assists partner agencies and vendors, maintains facility security, and processes customer fees and deposits. The role may include learning to operate a front-end loader after receiving proper training. The work is performed primarily in an office environment, with some travel and possible exposure to extreme weather, dust, noise, vibrations, and biohazards. Applicants must complete an extensive pre-employment background investigation, including a polygraph examination, fingerprinting, criminal-history checks, and other assessments. The background process commonly takes 6–8 weeks. Applicants who have used marijuana or CBD products within three months before submitting their application are ineligible for hire. The City does not sponsor work visas; applicants must already be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
