About The Position

The RN Evening Supervisor is responsible for the clinical and administrative oversight of the Hospice House during the evening shift. This role ensures that all patients receive compassionate, high-quality hospice care while providing leadership and support to the nursing staff. The Supervisor acts as the primary administrative authority on-site in the absence of the Executive Director or Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Graduate from accredited nursing program
  • Associates in nursing, BSN preferred.
  • Valid NYS Registered Nurse license.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in hospice, palliative care, oncology, or critical care.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Manages "after-hours" facility operations, including handling staff call-ins and coordinating with maintenance or pharmacy vendors as needed.
  • Covers shifts as needed to ensure safe nurse patient ratio.
  • Completes admission/transfer process for all patients arriving during work hours.
  • Covers shift as needed due to call outs or staffing emergencies.
  • Audits EMR for quality as directed by Coordinator or Executive Director.
  • Holds monthly night shift nursing meetings.
  • Provides effective feedback and completes performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Appropriately evaluates staff using field evaluation tool at designated intervals.
  • Alternating back up administrator on call requirement. Every other week.
  • Directs and evaluates nursing care provided by the interdisciplinary team to ensure adherence to individualized Plans of Care (POC).
  • Conducts regular rounds to monitor patient status, staff performance, and the facility environment.
  • Provides real-time clinical coaching and mentorship to staff, particularly in managing complex end-of-life symptoms (e.g., terminal agitation, respiratory distress).
  • Ensures all clinical documentation complies with state, federal, and agency regulatory standards.
  • Monitors and audits EMR entries for accuracy, focusing on documentation that supports continued hospice eligibility.
  • Investigates and documents any shift incidents or accidents involving patients or staff.
  • Oversees the admission/transfer process for new patients arriving during the evening shift, ensuring a welcoming and supportive transition.
  • May assist in triaging incoming calls from the after-hours field team to determine the need for emergent inpatient transfer.
  • Assesses staffing levels based on patient acuity and adjusts assignments to ensure safe and efficient care.
