About The Position

The GED Instructor plays a crucial role in guiding adult learners to successfully achieve their GED certification. This position is responsible for instruction and curriculum development, including the creation of engaging lesson plans. This position will teach all four core subjects of the GED Exam: Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science, with a specialization in Language Arts and Social Studies. The Instructor will also focus on student support and engagement, providing individualized assistance and fostering retention. Additionally, they will manage key administrative responsibilities, such as tracking progress and maintaining accurate records. The role also encompasses classroom management, ensuring an inclusive and effective learning environment in both in-person and online settings. The ideal candidate is a dedicated educator committed to student success and making a meaningful impact.

Requirements

  • Knowledge in GED-level reading and language arts, social studies, math and science concepts.
  • Ability to effectively teach diverse learners with varying abilities and backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficient classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to use complex databases to track student data.
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, adult basic education, or related field).
  • At least one year of experience teaching adults.
  • Active/Current Minnesota Teaching License.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience with platforms such as CampusVue, SID, Canvas, or Zoom for virtual instruction.
  • Master's degree (preferably in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, adult basic education, or related field).
  • More than 2 years of teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching online with Canvas, Google Classroom, and/or Zoom
  • Experience with CampusVue, Campus Nexus, or SID data systems.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and Facilitate Learning: Deliver interactive, engaging instruction to adult learners in both classroom and virtual settings. Tailor teaching to accommodate diverse learning styles and academic levels, ensuring that all students have the tools they need to succeed.
  • Lesson Planning: Develop comprehensive lesson plans in line with GED standards, focusing on core subjects like math, science, social studies and language arts. Incorporate various teaching methods to address the unique needs of adult learners, using visual aids, group activities, and digital resources to enhance understanding.
  • Best Practices & Innovation: Implement evidence-based teaching strategies and stay updated on educational technologies that promote student engagement and retention. Adapt your teaching approach to address the specific needs of the adult education environment.
  • Customized Study Plans: Work closely with students to create individualized study plans based on their specific academic challenges and goals. Use assessments to identify areas for improvement and provide additional support or resources to ensure their success.
  • Build Connections: Foster a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel valued, respected, and motivated to reach their goals. Develop meaningful connections with students by understanding their backgrounds, aspirations, and learning challenges.
  • Monitor Progress: Regularly assess student performance through quizzes, tests, and other evaluation methods. Provide constructive feedback and actionable insights to guide students toward continuous improvement.
  • Mentorship: Serve as both an instructor and a mentor, offering guidance not just in academics but in overcoming life challenges that may impact their education. Help students develop strategies for managing their time, handling stress, and balancing school with other responsibilities.
  • Recordkeeping: Keep detailed and accurate records of student progress, including attendance, assessment results, and individual growth. Ensure that all records comply with program and institutional requirements.
  • Meetings & Development: Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development workshops. Collaborate with colleagues to share strategies, discuss challenges, and improve teaching methods.
  • Reporting: Prepare and submit reports as required by the GED Program Manager. Ensure all documentation is completed on time and reflects the program's goals and compliance standards.
  • Learning Environment: Create a positive, engaging learning environment in both in-person and virtual formats. Set up the classroom and virtual platforms to facilitate interaction, collaboration, and student participation.
  • Technology Integration: Effectively use technology such as Zoom, Canvas, and other digital learning platforms to enhance the learning experience. Integrate multimedia tools, videos, and other digital resources to keep students engaged and connected, whether they are in the classroom or learning remotely.
  • Conflict Management: Address and resolve any issues in the classroom or online environment in a constructive and respectful manner. Foster a space where students feel comfortable, supported, and able to focus on learning.
