This position organizes, directs, and supervises the functions and activities of the laboratory’s second shift personnel, including Specimen Processing, Clinical Lab, and Phlebotomy areas. The role involves creating and maintaining employee work schedules, evaluating work performance, and conducting annual employee performance evaluations. The supervisor is responsible for training and orienting staff in pre and post-analytical processes, procedures, and computer functions, and assists section supervisors with training technical staff for second and third shifts. The position requires maintaining technical competencies as a Laboratory generalist to assist staff as needed. Responsibilities include conducting monthly sectional meetings, reviewing reports with follow-up and documentation, and participating in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards. The role also involves managing supplies, designing and implementing quality assurance projects, evaluating data, and maintaining procedure manuals in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards. Budgetary responsibilities include participation in preparation, operating within allocated budgets, making recommendations for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, keeping current with vendor contracts, and submitting monthly variance reports. The supervisor will interview applicants, make hiring recommendations, maintain confidentiality, and develop effective communication with staff, co-workers, physicians, hospital personnel, and outside organizations. Professional growth and development are maintained through approved seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations. A thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies, procedures, fire and disaster plans, and the union contract is required. Close working relationships with other section supervisors, reference laboratories, and other internal and external organizations are essential. Other work-related duties and activities may be assigned.
