About The Position

The Pollak Library at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track Ethnic Studies Librarian to join their dedicated community of librarians, staff, and student assistants. This position serves as the subject specialist and liaison to students and faculty in the African American Studies and Asian American Studies departments, providing library instruction, research support, collection development, and outreach. Strong disciplinary expertise in Ethnic Studies and/or related fields is expected. The role involves teaching specialized, course-integrated instruction sessions in both in-person and virtual formats, and designing and delivering library-sponsored workshops. As a member of the Public Services Unit, the librarian will also participate in general reference and instruction services, including reference desk hours and general library instruction sessions. The position requires providing in-depth research consultations and developing research guides, tutorials, and other asynchronous learning resources. Collaboration with faculty to develop library collections in Ethnic Studies and related areas is also a key responsibility. The librarian may support additional departments and programs as needed. Librarians at CSUF have faculty status and are expected to meet promotion and tenure requirements, including scholarly/professional and service activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent institution by the time of appointment
  • Academic background or demonstrated expertise in any of the disciplines within Ethnic Studies or related fields (e.g., African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American & Indigenous Studies, Chicana/o & Latinx Studies, Middle Eastern & North African Studies, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian Studies, Critical Race Studies, or other interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies areas).
  • Knowledge and experience with discipline-specific information databases and other research resources
  • Experience in research assistance via in-person, virtual reference, consultations, and teaching information literacy in higher education or comparable area
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability or expertise supporting a diverse environment with co-workers, students, faculty, and the wider campus community
  • Evidence of, or interest in, the pursuit of scholarly, creative, and professional activities
  • Ability to balance core librarian duties with scholarly, creative, and professional growth activities and service
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Library’s extensive instruction program by planning, teaching, and assessing faculty-requested library instruction sessions
  • In collaboration with the reference team of librarians, provide research assistance to the campus community via in-person and virtual research consultations and scheduled reference shifts
  • Perform subject liaison roles for African American Studies, Asian American Studies, and other Ethnic Studies departments as needed, developing collaborative relationships with faculty.
  • Lead the library team supporting Diversity Initiatives & Resource Centers (DIRC), serving as liaison to the centers as needed
  • Work with the Collection Development & Management Librarian to identify and select materials in subject areas, and consult on accreditation reports
  • Create and maintain online instructional materials and subject-specific content for the library website
  • Take part in scholarly/creative activities and serve on department, library, professional, and university committees, as part of the required tenure and promotion process
  • Contribute to library strategic initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned
