About The Position

The Ethicist provides professional ethics resource needs for specific operating units and collaborates with the rest of the Ethics team, to contribute to the overall strategy and agenda for ethics in OSF HealthCare. Provides organizational and clinical ethics consultation. Provides ethics education and policy review to contribute to an ethical environment and culture. For the sake of a lived culture of proactive ethics, the ethicist is a key figure for the integration of ethics and values in clinical practice, organizational decision making, practice and operations. In collaboration with the manager, serves as ethics consultant for ethics committees. Participates in the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of facility ethics programs beyond the ethics committees. Rounds routinely with medical residents, students, and interdisciplinary teams, to provide real-time ethics formation, education, and identify consultations early in the process.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in healthcare ethics, bioethics, theology, theological ethics, philosophical ethics, law or a field related to healthcare ethics
  • 1 year of healthcare experience or teaching ethics in the academic environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented.
  • Engages personal interactions with openness and compassion appropriate in the Catholic healthcare ministry.
  • Relates respectfully and well with persons.
  • Maintains confidentiality and trust necessary for professional interaction.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply, as well as competently teach, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services as well as other key source texts relative to the Catholic Healthcare Ministry
  • A Catholic, who accepts and supports the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Possesses competency and respectfulness regarding the needs of others relative to cultures, traditions, and religious beliefs and practices.
  • Knows, understands, incorporates and demonstrates the Mission, Values and Vision of OSF HealthCare and the Gospel norm of Catholic healthcare in interactions with others, personal conduct, practices and decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate in theological ethics, philosophical ethics, bioethics, or healthcare ethics
  • 1 year of healthcare ethics experience
