About The Position

The Landscape Designer is responsible for preparing complete, accurate, and profitable project estimates for commercial landscape construction and enhancement projects. This role analyzes project scope, specifications, and site conditions to determine labor, material, and equipment costs while protecting company margins. When requested, the Landscape Designer is also responsible for developing landscape designs to support sales, bid submissions, and client presentations. The Landscape Designer supports pre-construction planning and conducts a formal project turnover to operations but does not manage purchasing or field execution.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to create accurate cost estimates for landscape construction and enhancement projects.
  • Gather, calculate, and compile take-off data for use in bid proposals.
  • Develop complete cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
  • Obtain and review quotes from suppliers, vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing.
  • Ensure all scope items are captured with no gaps.
  • Develop conceptual or detailed landscape designs to support sales and bidding efforts.
  • Create planting plans, layout drawings, and hardscape concepts as required.
  • Ensure designs align with client budgets and project feasibility.
  • Coordinate design intent with account managers, project managers, and clients.
  • Adjust designs to meet value engineering needs.
  • Ensure designs are constructible and aligned with field production capabilities.
  • Compute total costs by analyzing labor, material, and time requirements.
  • Utilize estimating software to generate bid proposals and cost reports.
  • Develop and maintain a database of material, labor, and subcontractor pricing to ensure up-to-date, competitive estimates.
  • Meet or exceed target gross margin goals.
  • Participate in job cost reviews.
  • Update production rates based on historical data.
  • Identify cost risks before proposal submission.
  • Identify and collect travel costs for out-of-town projects to include in proposals.
  • Conduct formal handoff meeting with Project Manager.
  • Review estimate, assumptions, and vendor quotes.
