Bechtel is TerraPower’s engineering, procurement, and construction partner on the first-of-a-kind Natrium™ Demonstration Project in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The project is a part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. With a sodium fast reactor, integrated energy storage and flexible power production, Natrium technology offers carbon-free energy at a competitive cost and is ready to integrate seamlessly into electric grids with important levels of renewables. Bechtel adds current and unmatched experience managing and executing large nuclear projects to the team. This role will develop and implement the safety management program on the project with assistance of the Natrium ES&H Manager, Project Management and NS&E Safety Services Functional Manager. Provides technical oversight of the project's ES&H compliance activities for the Test and Fill Facility through identification and integration of applicable requirements into project designs, subcontract bid specifications, construction plans and schedules and other field execution activities. Works directly with other project-level functional leads (e.g., engineering, construction, subcontracts, procurement, project controls, document controls) to assist them in integrating and/or addressing the applicable ES&H requirements in their work products and activities. Coordinates with Natrium ES&H Manager, NS&E Safety Services Functional Manager regarding significant project ES&H issues and safety support needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in life sciences (e.g., biology, public health) or physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry), or safety/industrial engineering from an accredited college or university and 8-10 years of related experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience. Or 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience
  • Advanced knowledge in the field of science, safety/industrial engineering, or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of safety programs/engineering systems, principles, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of national and international safety laws/regulations and regulatory agencies & regulatory requirements and responsibilities, industry standards/current practices for ES&H, and best management practices for minimizing potential ES&H risks during project execution.
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction systems, methods, and work processes.
  • Knowledge of construction planning, estimating, procedures, and execution.
  • Prior practical work experience in office settings (e.g., managing ES&H programs, budgets, and staff) and field locations (e.g., construction execution and/or operating facilities) performing the responsibilities listed above.
  • Experience in managing and/or providing technical oversight of ES&H subcontractors or consultants.
  • Experience in ES&H assessments/inspection during construction.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials and physical risks and the mechanisms to mitigate them.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Must be physically capable of conducting field inspections and participate in project walkdowns which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in small and/or confined spaces.
  • Prior experience in nuclear construction, operations, or modification work packages
  • Knowledge of Bechtel standard computer applications
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s organization structure, functions, and administrative procedures.
  • Must possess legal rights to work in US without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to pass nuclear security screening requirements and be able to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear power facility.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates a wide variety of Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) disciplines to facilitate implementation of Bechtel's ES&H program and ES&H Management System, including aiding compliance with Bechtel's ES&H standards, applicable regulatory requirements, and contractual commitments.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures necessary for the safety and health of employees and protection of the environment and communities.
  • Ensures maintenance of ES&H databases, inclusive of incident events, audit/assessment findings, and corrective actions.
  • Performs statistical analysis of ES&H data to identify performance trends and contributing factors as part of continuous improvement and makes recommendations accordingly.
  • Identifies and supports coordination of implementation of unique software systems and electronic innovation used by ES&H personnel.
  • Leads teams in conducting risk assessments, studies, mitigation planning, and monitoring in response to ES&H issues.
  • Prepares communications, drafts reports, and prepares documents for program execution and records retention.
  • Coordinates incident notifications, leads investigations, and prepares incident investigation reports.
  • Recommend and implement improvements in processes, procedures, and work activities to minimize hazard potential.
  • Participates in and may lead employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs.
  • Leads coordination of ES&H recognition programs.
  • Research a moderately complex issue and provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
  • Provides support to ES&H field and office personnel, inclusive of all ES&H disciplines.
