About The Position

As an Emergency Room Technician, you will provide basic nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department under the supervision of professional nursing staff. You will assist ER nurses and providers while supporting patient care, patient flow, and department operations.

Requirements

  • No previous experience required.
  • Completion of a 72-hour CNA course required.
  • Ability to qualify through an Iowa Criminal History/Dependent Adult Abuse background check.
  • Ability to provide care for patients of all ages, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the care of patients presenting to the Emergency Department within the CNA scope of practice.
  • Help enter patients into the electronic health record (EHR) and update demographic and insurance information.
  • Perform basic nursing procedures, including thermal applications, non-sterile soaks, simple dressings, and perineal care.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturation, weight, and pain level.
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs after required training and competency validation.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory using proper procedures.
  • Utilize the overhead paging system to alert staff of emergency situations such as trauma alerts, cardiac alerts, and rapid responses.
  • Assist patients with personal care needs, including bathing, dressing, eating, oral care, and hygiene.
  • Assist with toileting needs and patient transport within the department and throughout the facility.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient documentation in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Clean, return, and restock patient care equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with linen changes and cleaning patient rooms and treatment bays.
  • Report unusual patient conditions or reactions to the nurse in charge.
  • Serve on hospital committees supporting quality assurance and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist Med/Surg patients within the CNA scope of practice when Emergency Department volume permits.
  • Act as the unit secretary when needed.
  • Participate in educational programs, workshops, and departmental meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
