About The Position

Join the Emergency Department team at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center (NARMC) as an Emergency Department Technician. The Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care and clinical support under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). The Emergency Department Technician assists with patient care, emergency procedures, patient transportation, specimen collection, equipment maintenance, documentation, and other clinical and support activities necessary for efficient Emergency Department operations. This position works with patients of all ages and supports care for a wide range of emergency conditions, including medical, surgical, cardiac, trauma, and pediatric emergencies.

Requirements

One of the following: Student in good standing in an accredited Registered Nurse program who has completed at least one year of nursing education.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
Nursing Assistant.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
EMT student.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
Ability to perform physical patient-care activities, including lifting, transferring, positioning, and transporting patients.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced Emergency Department environment.
Ability to follow clinical procedures, safety requirements, and infection prevention practices.

Nice To Haves

Previous Emergency Department, acute care, hospital, or patient-care experience.
Previous experience with cardiac monitoring, EKGs, venipuncture, specimen collection, or blood glucose testing.
Experience working with patients across the lifespan.
Completion of additional Emergency Department Technician, EMT, nursing assistant, or other healthcare training.

Responsibilities

Assist nurses and other clinical team members with patient care and activities of daily living.
Provide compassionate, professional communication to patients and families.
Assist with the care of patients experiencing medical, surgical, cardiac, trauma, and pediatric emergencies.
Monitor and report changes in patient condition or abnormal findings to the appropriate nurse or supervisor.
Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, and weight.
Apply and utilize cardiac monitoring and pulse oximetry equipment.
Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) after required training and competency validation.
Perform blood glucose testing according to department policy.
Perform venipuncture and discontinue intravenous sites after required training and competency validation.
Collect, identify, label, and transport urine, stool, sputum, and other specimens according to hospital policy.
Assist with emergency and clinical procedures, including laceration repair, orthopedic procedures, chest tube insertion, and other procedures within the scope of the Emergency Department.
Perform wound care, sterile dressing application, eye irrigation, enemas, and other delegated patient-care activities.
Assist with patient transfers between beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and other locations.
Safely transport patients who do not require continuous cardiac monitoring.
Assist with lifting, positioning, transferring, and ambulating patients using appropriate techniques and equipment.
Assist with application of restraints according to hospital policy and direction from the clinical team.
Perform post-mortem care as assigned.
Maintain, clean, disinfect, and appropriately store Emergency Department equipment and supplies.
Keep Emergency Department rooms clean, stocked, organized, and ready to receive patients.
Assist with maintaining adequate supplies and equipment throughout each shift.
Enter and document patient-care information in the electronic medical record.
Maintain proficiency with computer systems, order entry, hospital paging systems, and Emergency Department communication systems.
Answer Emergency Department telephone calls and patient call lights promptly and professionally.
Assist with meal trays, bedpans, urinals, and other patient needs as appropriate.
Measure and document patient output, including urine, stool, and drainage.
Follow through on tests, procedures, and assignments carried over from previous shifts and communicate incomplete tasks appropriately.
Complete assignments in a timely manner and communicate any barriers to completion to the charge nurse.
Follow infection prevention and control practices and hospital safety policies.
Participate in departmental meetings, training, and annual competency requirements.
Respond appropriately and effectively during emergency situations.
Work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, ancillary departments, and other members of the healthcare team.
Provide equitable, respectful care to patients regardless of age, race, sex, religion, cultural background, or ability to pay.
Maintain patient confidentiality and professional standards of conduct.
Perform other duties as assigned by the charge nurse or Nurse Manager.
