About The Position

Onex is seeking students to join Onex Canada Asset Management/Onex Credit as an Equity Research Co-op in their Toronto office. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with senior investment professionals, take on increasing amounts of responsibility, and be actively engaged in the investment decision process. Onex is an investor and asset manager that invests capital on behalf of Onex shareholders and clients globally. Formed in 1984, Onex has a long track record of creating value. Onex became a public company in 1987 and is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol ONEX. Onex's two primary businesses are Private Equity and Credit. In Private Equity, they raise funds from third-party investors and invest them, along with Onex’ own investing capital, through the funds of their private equity platforms: Onex Partners and ONCAP. Similarly, in Credit, they raise and invest capital across several private credit, liquid credit and public equity strategies. Their investors include a broad range of global clients, including public and private pension plans, sovereign wealth funds, insurance companies, family offices and high net worth individuals. Onex has $55.9 billion in assets under management, of which $8.4 billion is Onex’ own investing capital. They generate value for their shareholders through two segments: Investing and Asset Management.

Requirements

  • Passion for public markets investing demonstrated through extra-curricular involvement, past job experiences, and/or personal investing
  • Excellent analytical capability, quantitative skills, and financial fluency
  • Financial modelling experience or strong understanding of accounting concepts
  • Ability to communicate effectively with investment professionals and build relationships across teams
  • Great attention to detail
  • Strong academic standing
  • Independent thinker and intellectually curious
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the country where the role is based, or eligible for any necessary work authorization or permit.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Bloomberg is an asset
  • Equity research, investment banking, consulting, private equity, or other related experience is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Conduct differentiated fundamental analysis on public equities by assessing the viability of its business models, industry positioning, financial metrics, and portfolio strategy
  • Synthesize, communicate, and present investment ideas to Portfolio Managers and Analysts
  • Attend meetings with executive management teams and sell-side analysts as part of the due diligence process when evaluating investment ideas
  • Listen to earnings calls and monitor news relating to your coverage universe/companies
  • Build relative (comps and precedents) and intrinsic value models
  • Effectively use available research tools to support the investment process
