About The Position

Maintaining Provincial Infrastructure is a significant task, and the Department of Public Works is responsible for Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and 4,100 bridges. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy operating heavy equipment, seek flexible work, and want to contribute directly to the safety of the province.

Requirements

  • Must be declared competent as an OPTP (One Person Truck Plow) operator by the Department of Public Works.
  • Reading and writing comprehension is necessary for completing daily logs and inspection reports.
  • Flexibility, self-motivation, and comfort working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Professionalism and a high standard for client service.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Previous experience operating trucks with salt and plow equipment.
  • A Class I license.
  • Knowledge of salt spreading systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operating summer maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, graders, and loaders with various attachments.
  • Operating snow removal equipment such as snow-plows, graders, and loaders during the Winter Works Period.
  • Performing general maintenance of equipment.
  • Conducting pre- and post-trip inspections.
  • Completing daily logs.
  • Assisting with construction and maintenance work such as maintaining traffic control signs, road surface repairs, general maintenance, and traffic control, depending on provincial needs.
