About The Position

The Equipment Operator will operate civil construction equipment safely and efficiently to meet daily production plans. This role involves performing basic inspections and maintenance, following grade and staking directions, and documenting work as directed. The operator will support the crew by adapting to site conditions while upholding safety and quality standards.

Requirements

  • 6–18 months civil/site experience operating entry-level equipment or successful completion of internal training.
  • Ability to safely operate assigned equipment under supervision and follow grade directions from stakes/lasers.
  • Basic equipment care (cleaning, fueling, greasing) and pre-operation inspections.
  • Awareness of trenching/traffic control requirements; follows spotter/hand signals.
  • OSHA 10, First Aid, Flagger; NCCER HEO unit(s) a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Safe operation of assigned equipment.
  • Pre-trip/post-trip inspections.
  • Preventive maintenance.
  • Trenching and traffic control awareness.
  • Earthworks and compaction.
  • Reading stakes and following laser directions.
  • Basic blueprint reading.
  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
  • Procore exposure for daily documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned equipment (e.g., skid steer, dozer, roller) efficiently to complete daily tasks.
  • Perform pre-operation inspections and routine care (cleaning, fueling, greasing); report leaks/damage immediately.
  • Maintain safe work areas, spot, and follow hand signals and traffic control measures.
  • Read and follow basic grade stakes and laser directions; support grade control to hold elevation.
  • Maintain basic Procore inputs or provide inputs to the foreman for daily logs/photos as directed.
  • Support the Foreman with task sequencing, safe access, and housekeeping to keep work moving.
  • Support the Survey/layout team with staking protection and laser setups; adjust work to grade directions.
  • Support the Safety team with JSAs, trenching/shoring compliance, and traffic control setups.
  • Recommend equipment or tooling needs to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Provide field notes on obstacles (utilities, soft ground, water) that impact plan or grade.
  • Suggest simple improvement ideas to reduce rework, shorten moves, or improve cleanup/compaction.
  • Escalate equipment malfunctions, fluid leaks, or unsafe conditions.
  • Escalate conflicts with grade stakes, plan marks, or unclear cut/fill instructions.
  • Escalate traffic conflicts, overhead/underground hazards, or trench stability concerns.
