The Work You Will Do: Equipment Operator - District Five / Brevard Maintenance This position will operate various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance, perform minor equipment maintenance, and assist with repairs and cleaning. Lead and coordinate the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Also perform manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and help install highway signs. Requirements

Requires one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire.
Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 180 days of hire.
Candidates must be United States (U.S.) citizens, or lawfully authorized alien workers, and must possess permanent work authorization for any U.S. employer.
Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Skills in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query.
Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.
To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance
Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Cleans and washes equipment.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
