About The Position

The Equipment Operator-Mosquito Control PT performs routine work operating a fog truck equipped with an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) sprayer to apply insecticide treatments for the reduction of adult mosquito populations throughout the St. Lucie County Mosquito Control District. Work is performed under the direction of the Lead Fog Truck Driver and involves night operations, safe pesticide handling, accurate reporting, and adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position supports public health initiatives and community mosquito control efforts.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Limited mechanical knowledge of trucks and fogging equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge of safe fog truck operation under various conditions and understanding of County geography and mosquito control zone maps.
  • Knowledge of safe pesticide handling practices, label compliance, and emergency spill procedures.
  • Capacity to operate a fog truck and ULV sprayer accurately and efficiently.
  • Aptitude for reading maps, completing reports, and performing basic data entry.
  • Proficient in basic communication (verbal and written), reading, and math skills.
  • Adept with operating computers and two-way radios.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to work night assignments and remain alert for extended periods.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Physical requirements: Work requires frequent walking, standing, kneeling, bending, squatting, and extended periods of sitting while driving.
  • The position requires use of both hands and feet with good manual dexterity, as well as adequate vision and hearing (with or without correction).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently is required.
  • Sufficient physical stamina and strength to operate equipment and perform manual tasks associated with vehicle operation, fueling, inspections, and spill response activities.
  • Employees may be exposed to pesticides and chemicals used in mosquito control and must adhere strictly to safety and label requirements.
  • Work occurs in areas with pedestrian and vehicular traffic and may include exposure to environmental hazards such as insects, snakes, spiders, wasps, bees, ants, and toxic plants.
  • Required safety equipment may include gloves, goggles, respirator, ear protection, closed-toed shoes, protective clothing, and mandatory seat belt use while operating vehicles.
  • Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Employees must wear designated PPE, which may include safety goggles, gloves, hearing protection, and respiratory masks, depending on the tasks performed.
  • All employees will receive training on the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and PPE to minimize risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Employees are responsible for regularly inspecting their PPE for wear and tear and reporting any damaged equipment to their supervisor for replacement.
  • Familiarity with the location and use of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, chemical spill kits, and eyewash stations, is required.
  • This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned fog truck and ULV sprayer to apply mosquito control treatments accurately and safely.
  • Read and interpret mosquito control zone maps to determine treatment locations.
  • Monitor weather conditions to ensure optimal and compliant spray application.
  • Remain alert to traffic conditions, road hazards, and applicable ordinances during operations.
  • Fuel fog truck and sprayer and check fluid levels prior to and during assignments.
  • Perform routine visual inspections of equipment.
  • Report mechanical failures or operational issues to the supervisor promptly.
  • Complete detailed reports of fogging assignments, including areas treated and materials used.
  • Utilize computers and two-way radios for communication and data entry.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and interact professionally with the public.
  • Safely handle and apply pesticides in accordance with product labels, SDS guidelines, and County procedures.
  • Follow emergency spill procedures and assist in spill cleanup as required.
  • Comply with all safety protocols, including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Employees are considered essential personnel in providing and continuing services to our community during and following a disaster, such as a hurricane, or in other emergency situations.
  • Employees may be required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and/or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator.
  • During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
