About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy motorized equipment in constructing and maintaining the City’s infrastructure and collecting and disposing of the City’s solid waste. This role involves operating heavy equipment for road and utility work, refuse collection, and other related tasks. The operator is responsible for inspecting and fueling equipment, ensuring work area safety, and maintaining logs. They may also assist with snow removal, traffic control, and perform crew worker duties when not operating equipment. A variety of specialized equipment may be used to complete essential functions, including trucks, snow removal equipment, chippers, and more. The role also includes loading and unloading refuse, delivering dumpsters, and separating debris at the recycling center.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

Responsibilities

Operates heavy equipment in the installation and repair of the City’s roads and water/wastewater utilities, and the collection and disposal of refuse.
Inspects equipment before and following operation; fuels equipment as needed.
Ensures cleanliness and safety of the work area.
Delivers equipment to and from outside repair facilities.
Maintains logs of work completed, work orders, fuel used, and equipment and supplies used.
Assists with snow removal as needed.
Flags traffic at work site; sets up barricades.
Performs crew worker duties when not operating equipment.
Operates dumpster truck, dump truck, snow removal equipment, chipper, leaf vacuum, log splitter, garbage truck, chain saw, shovel, rake, weed eater, jet rodder, easement machine, electric eel, electric saw, backhoe, ventilator, tripod, roller, sheeps foot machine, air compressor, radio or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
Drives truck on assigned route; loads refuse from the street curb into the truck; picks up limbs and other debris; reports any violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.
Loads and hauls debris and white goods.
Unloads refuse at disposal site; cleans vehicle after unloading.
Delivers and picks up commercial-type dumpsters.
Separates debris at the recycling center.
Splits tires and logs.
Assists in maintaining and repairing equipment.
Performs general building and landscape cleaning and maintenance.
Performs other related duties as required.
