About The Position

Operate a variety of equipment in the operations, maintenance and construction of streets, storm sewers and related facilities; and assist in the performance of semi-skilled and skilled tasks required for operation, maintenance and construction purposes. This is the full journey level class within the equipment operator series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Senior Equipment Operator by the operation of the full range of medium sized equipment and selected heavy equipment under general supervision with no assigned supervisory responsibilities. Employees at this level may receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and they are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are not flexibly staffed and when filled, require directly related work experience.

Operational characteristics of equipment used in assigned area of responsibility.
Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
Operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment.
Provide training and guidance to less experienced staff.
Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in operation, maintenance and construction work in assigned area of responsibility.
Operate a variety of road maintenance and snow removal equipment.
Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods often under severe weather conditions.
Work safely and adhere to principles of safety in any work environment.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
At least one year of experience in the operation of any type of medium to heavy equipment.
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurability as determined by the City’s insurance carrier.
Possession of an appropriate, valid Class B commercial driver’s license within three (3) months of hire.
Required to maintain a residence with a 30-minute commute of the City’s Public Works Facility, located at: 1111 W North Front St, Grand Island, NE

Responsibilities

Operate equipment such as front-end loaders, motor graders, snow plows, sand trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, bucket trucks, tractors with various attachments, chippers, sewer flushers and sewer vac-alls, forklifts and other related maintenance construction equipment.
Assist in patching roads by hand-sweeping surfaces, loading asphalt and raking and shoveling asphalt; use rollers to roll hot mix.
Operate a jackhammer to clear debris for road repairs.
Assist with ice and snow removal.
Install, clean and repair culverts.
Assist with cleaning, maintenance or repairing of fences, drainage structures, buildings and related structures.
Clean and maintain streets and storm sewers.
Locate storm sewer pipes and/or other city infrastructure.
Perform a variety of routine repair and maintenance tasks on equipment and tools.
Mow, trim trees, maintain municipal facilities and use a variety of equipment in the maintenance of City rights-of-way.
Perform related duties as assigned.
