About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled equipment operation and street maintenance and repair duties for the City of Canon City. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in equipment operation with a focus in street maintenance, street construction, or a similarly related type of work.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • The ability to obtain a Colorado Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License, with Tanker Endorsement, within 6 months from date of hire. This deadline may be extended at the discretion of the Department Director.
  • General knowledge of performing street maintenance and repair duties.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as snowplow, sand spreader, dump truck, trencher, scraper, asphalt laying machine, mower, welder, jackhammer, asphalt rake, grinder, grader, roller, tractor, backhoe, and loader.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools such as cutters, chain saws, shovels, and rakes.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials used in operations street maintenance operations.

  • Experience operating a Backhoe.
  • Currently hold a Colorado Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License, with Tanker Endorsement
  • Hold Flagger Certification
  • Hold Loader Certification

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment such as snow plow, sand spreader, dump truck, trencher, asphalt laying machine, mower, welder, jackhammer, asphalt rake, grinder, grader, roller, tractor, backhoe, and loader to accomplish duties such as street patching, crack filling, street construction, bridge repair, concrete removal, dirt removal, curb/gutter/sidewalk construction, road grading, right-of-way maintenance, cleaning ditches, culvert maintenance, material hauling, de-icing, and snow plowing.
  • Monitor equipment and reports needs for equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Cleans equipment.
  • Use hand tools such as rake, grease gun, hand broom and shovel as required.
  • Answer questions from the public regarding streets.
  • Performs traffic control in and around work zones.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours and weekends.
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.
  • Perform related maintenance duties such as clearing brush, controlling weeds, pruning trees and shrubs, removing litter and trash, concrete work, and sweeping streets and gutters as required.
  • Some positions perform duties of: Street Crew Leader during absences; design, build, and maintain building structures by surveying, design, dirt work, concrete, framing, welding, electrical, plumbing, roofing, siding, and finishing.
  • Establish effective relationships with employees, government officials, news media representatives, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Perform related duties as established by law or ordinance or as reasonably directed by the City.
