About The Position

The Equipment Operator Journeyman operates one or several types of power construction equipment to excavate, move, and grade material. The role involves operating vehicles and heavy equipment for maintenance and repair work on roads and rights-of-way, including loading, hauling, and dumping on surfaces ranging from smooth to extremely rough. The operator may also train employees in safe equipment and tool operation and inspect subordinate work for compliance with contract plans and specifications.

Requirements

• May require a high school diploma or equivalent and prior experience in the field or a related area.
• Strong working knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
• Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with management and supervision.
• Proficiency in the safe and efficient use of electrical, hand, power, layout, and measurement tools.
• Must have required tools.
• Must be able to pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing and fit-for-duty medical assessment.

Responsibilities

• Operate vehicles and heavy equipment to perform maintenance and repairs on roads and rights-of-way, including loading, hauling, and dumping on varied surfaces.
• Load gravel, dirt, and sand; smooth and grade roads; and spread rock and gravel.
• Trench and construct ditches for culvert, water pipe, and sewer pipe installation, and remove silt and debris.
• Check and maintain equipment fluid levels and lubrication.
• Instruct and train employees in safe construction equipment and tool operation and job techniques and skills, as needed.
• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify errors, problems, or defects.
• Estimate sizes, distances, and quantities, and determine time, costs, resources, or materials needed for work activities.
• Inspect subordinate work for compliance with contract plans and specifications, identify deficiencies, and explain and take corrective action.
• Observe and comply with safety and project rules and perform other duties as required.
