About The Position

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for its Road and Bridge Division. The position reports to the New Smyrna location in Volusia County, Florida, and performs skilled heavy-equipment work supporting road maintenance and drainage tasks. The operator transports equipment to job sites throughout the county and conducts daily safety inspections of assigned equipment before and after use. The employee may be assigned to other county locations based on operational needs and may respond to emergencies.

Requirements

• Completion of the eighth grade and three years of experience operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment; comparable education, training, or experience may be substituted.
• Possess a valid Florida CDL Class B at hire and maintain it thereafter.
• If assigned to drainage operations, possess a valid Florida CDL Class A within six months of hire and maintain it thereafter.
• Possess a valid driver's license at hire and maintain it thereafter.
• Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
• Knowledge of heavy-equipment operation, routine maintenance, and pre- and post-trip inspections.
• Knowledge of the operation and safety precautions for assigned equipment.
• Skill in operating complex construction and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships.
• Ability to work under stressful conditions.
• Ability to relocate to other county locations based on operational needs.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations.
• Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, and memos.
• Ability to write simple sentences conveying information, data, and details.
• Ability to perform basic math.
• Ability to pull, push, lift, and carry 75 pounds, and to reach, climb, sit, turn, handle, and see with near and far acuity and depth perception.

Responsibilities

• Operate 10-wheel commercial trucks.
• Operate equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, and skid steers.
• Place and remove pipe as needed.
• Operate a truck-mounted pavement striping machine as needed.
• Operate a motor grader for construction and maintenance work as needed.
• Operate heavy-duty gasoline or diesel road rollers for compaction as needed.
• Load aggregates and construction materials.
• Operate a bulldozer as needed.
• Operate a lowboy to transport equipment to and from job sites as needed.
• Participate in the crew's general laboring work as workload demands.
• Conduct daily safety inspections of assigned equipment before and after use.
• Perform routine equipment service and maintenance.
• Attend work regularly and consistently.
• Respond to emergency situations.
• Adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
• Perform the duties and responsibilities of an Equipment Operator II.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
