About The Position

Under general supervision, operates a variety of complex motorized equipment used in the maintenance of public streets, highways, and alleys. Repairs potholes and damaged roadways, creates asphalt overlays, and grades and maintains public alleyways. Operates other street maintenance equipment as necessary including loaders to load asphalt, concrete, and utilizes hand and small power tools. Properly performs preventive maintenance and safety checks on assigned equipment. Conducts daily inspection of assigned equipment to ensure proper working condition; inspects tires, lights, blades, fuel, fluids, windshield wipers. Removes obstacles from street and gutter areas to permit access. Responds to hazardous materials spills. Ensures the safety of city equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for pedestrians, private property, overhead utility lines and other utilities or obstructions; performs traffic management duties such as flagging vehicles. Maintain log of daily activities. Performs other related work as required. Individual assignments will be determined by supervisor based on current workload and department needs.

Requirements

  • Completion of 10th grade in high school.
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment, street or concrete repair work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some lead work experience.
  • An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and sex offender registry check.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class -B, and a favorable driving record.
  • Pre-employment medical evaluation and substance abuse testing.
  • Ability to obtain Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger Certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ability to complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System Certifications within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must be physically able to operate a heavy motorized vehicle.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people or things.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read maps, work orders and simple forms, and the ability to complete work orders, vehicle check lists, leave slips and time sheets using prescribed format.
  • Ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently using Standard English, and mechanical, technical and electrical terminology.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
  • Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using equipment utilized for street maintenance.
  • Ability to handle a variety of items, such as equipment used to maintain streets.
  • Minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress (emergency situations).
  • Ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

  • High school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training is preferred.
